How much winch is enough?

That is all good information. Where did you find this?
Go to the HF web page for the winch, then download the owners manual.

Yep, it's a 10,000 winch then.
Doubling using a snatch block is certainly useful but has several caveats. Namely it runs at half speed, you have 1/2 of your usable line length (irrelevant though if you are just loading a tractor), takes a bit longer to set up and put away, and all of your rigging components need to be rated for 10,000 if you are actually pulling that weight

Well, he said it was on a trailer and was wanting to use to pull a no start tractor onto the trailer. He was asking about a 5,000 winch he already had.

I went by my neighbors yesterday. Heckuva team roper. But, he has a new to him dump truck, two ton truck. Has an electric winch on front. Is it big enough? No. I'm sure all the times he gets barely stuck, he is glad he has it. I was down so bad lately, I had a big winch truck pick my whole back end up. Had a large articulated loader in front pulling. We all three drove until I was out. Smallest chain we had was 3/4" and that's something to wrestle with. Next day I stuck in another field and used a D7 to pull me. I had to tie on and un hook six times before I got the manure spread.

This is as far as my Harbor Freight 12k winch could pull my L4060. As it sits with the loader & flail, probably 7k lbs or so. Tractor ran fine other than leaving it in gear with the brakes locked. I was testing out the 2" reciever welded on the front of the trailer to see if everything would hold. Welds, front brace & cheap Amazon winch cradle all held up.

It would pull things fine if it could roll at all. If the drive train was locked up I'd have to double line it.

Only used the winch 3 times in the few years I've had it. Loading some logs & 2 dead but rolling vehicles. Nice to have just in case though.

I have a trailer very similar to the one in post #24. I used a 2 ton come-a-long to load a 1993 Cadillac STS and had to resort to using a snatch block to double the power in order to get it loaded.

Good to know. Nice picture.

My dealer bought a HD flat bed wrecker setup for hauling broke down heavy tractors. Got down to $50 round trip, so my trailer gets little use anymore. Dealer is 30 miles one way, does not make sense for me to load, unload and haul it both ways for $25 per side.
