How Not to Transplant a Tree

Looks like a bad deal: though a nice pleasing looking tree the two main branbches pose the most problem with the fact that OAK usually shoot a tap root and feeder roots down to the approxatematly same saize as the tre's exposed branch system above ground! It MAY make it but again, you may be wasting some time...

Thanks for the input. This transplant plan of mine should have been bounced of the TBN brain-trust before beginning. Probably would have kept me from trying my stunt.

My wife talked to the 'tree service" guys today (I should have done that too....last week). They say they can transplant trees up to 40' tall with a tree spade. They didn't offer much hope for my effort.

Here's a final shot of the aftermath. The root mass is about 4' by 7'. I think "firewood" sounds good.

I would not think that the tree will survive but you can try. ald let it go this year in the ground and wait untill summer next year to see for sure. the photos look pretty much like the tree has a poor chance though I'm not a profesional tree surgen or such. Just my 2 cents worth and my experiance as a tree transplanter of saplings. one thinnng is that trees store lots of energy in the root system when they are dormant and if you prune or cut when dorment the tree will have extra groth in spring as the energy is relealsed, now the tree may have enough stored energy to recover only way to see for sure is to plant and tamp lightly in around the roots with grade a soil. stake the tree and leave it staked for two years after wards if it survives. use lots of water and plant tree food too.

Where I live the cost of a large truck mounted tree spade transplant is $125.00 per tree and the price goes down for each additional tree. I had 9 16 foot tall pines transplanted last year for about $90 bucks each. Took them about an hour to do all of them.

Now, that sounds like reasonable pricing. When my wife called the Nursery, they told her a price of a few hundred to move the tree. That sounds way high, but I've never priced that kind of work before, so I don't really know.
