Tiller How often do you clean roots from tiller tines?

/ How often do you clean roots from tiller tines? #21
Should I roto till the garden in the fall and plant rye or something or should I leave it a little more stable to over winter. I tilled for spring and summer crops, and added peat, do I need to add any amendments in preparation for next year. Got the tools just not the experience.
Thanks,
Neil

I cannot answer. I'm the tractor guy not the green thumb.

I try to till horse crap (composted for a year) in the fall along with any garden residue, and then again in the spring before planting. At that time I usually add a generic 10-10-10 fertilizer.
Hope this helps

Has anyone tried ripping out roots like that using the rippers on a box blade? Results?

I plant oats or rye in the fall after lightly tilling in the garden crop residue. I was using rye, but it can get out of control in the spring if you don't get on it early and kill it with a light Roundup spray. It can be a big mess if you let it get too tall, and will fill a tiller like roots can. Oats provides much less of a cover, but it is supposed to freeze out in the winter and not need to be sprayed early spring. Unfortunately my oats come back in the spring just like winter wheat and I still need to spray them, but they are slower growing than rye and easier to manage for me especially if it's a wet spring.

Power & Ford, Thanks, answers my question so I now have a plan. No manure maybe peat?

If I had manure, I would definitely add that in the fall before the light till. I do add peat to my small garden when I till in the spring. I add that where my next row will be planted, then till it in and plant. Then move to the next row and repeat. Pun intended. :)

RotaryTiller - start looking for new tines at your Kubota dealer. I would clean the "crap" from the tines on my TroyBilt when they were about half way clogged up. If I let it build up further - the thing did not dig right.

Usually the first pass on virgin ground will "pick up" most of the roots. Subsequent passes should be almost root free.

^^ Poster isn't looking for help. They made the same post word for word on old threads to get enough post count to start a thread with a spam survey.
