Survival, and for how long in a major disaster would depend on several things. Do you live in a rural environment or urban? If you live in a urban environment your chances of survival are greatly diminished. Your age will also be a factor. Damage to the infrastructure will also be a huge factor. No roads, no bridges, no traffic control devices, etc will mean the urban and rural resident will be stranded. No electrical service will mean as the people in NY and NJ found out, no gasoline or diesel so this will impact the rural resident also.
The list of things that will impact survival ability are too numerous to list.
Most of the posts I read were made by people who currently live in a rural environment. Most had gardens, chickens, cows, hogs. Most had firearms and would rely on foraging for game. In disasters wildlife is disbursed and would no longer be present. So the only animal left to hunt will be human. Depending on the type of disaster, hurricane, tornado, etc would also result in the destruction of potential vegetative food supplies.
In a rural environment we provide our on transportation. In an urban environment mass transit is the major mover of residents. Most urban dwellers live in high rises. No power no elevators. How many times will a 40-50-60-70-80 year old be able to climb 18 flights of stairs? What does one do with the ones that die in the stairwells?
In an urban environment a week or more of food for a family is rare. They need food; they stop at a store on the way in or out. In a rural environment we have to drive for miles to reach a store, so we stockpile items. In the urban environment even if food stores were looted the number that could be feed when compared to the masses is small. No re-supply will hasten not prolong survivability.
Remember others will also be being subjected to the same, so where will help if any going to come from.
So we can all wax philosophical about how we would survive, but in reality I don稚 think we would last long.

I wouldn't ,I said there would be those who would ! I am totally prepared to survive off the grid and find it humorous that most posted about how they would not be able to survive without it , REALLY ? I kind of remember farmers building barns ,fences , homes ,and out buildings with out nails let alone an air nailer powered by a compressor powered by a generator powered by fuel that was delivered by truck to a gas station that is powered by electricity that is powered by coal . And once you have a source of free power be it a windmill to produce limited power and pump water or a waterwheel again a limited source of power either of these would give you something to barter with and they did 100 years ago !, Would you run to the chicken coop and kill the chicken for that nights dinner or let her lay an egg a day for years ? and when you add solar and batteries to these basic sources of power your golden ! The NEED we have grown accustomed to for instant gratification and the easiest way possible to perform even basic tasks has made the thought of being able to survive without cable and a new truck unthinkable ! And for those taking a hand full of medications a day, well are you sure you really need them ? or are you taking mood elevators and stress relievers and blood pressure pills along with anti anxiety pills along with anti acids and sleeping pills to deal with the stress from trying to figure how to pay for your new truck and 5,000 square foot house you don't need for any reason except to show the neighbors how "RICH" you are ?

And for those who posted they would serve their community ,well you have the problem of providing a large amount of resources (food /heat/shelter ) and when the providers are out numbered by dependents you find yourself in the same shape as we are now .
