I do have a poumd that I need to stock.... I do have some trout in there, but not a lot. And as we re not home to often, bird are habing feast in the pound. I was not planning on stocking it untill we are home full time. And the pound is acting as a swiming pool as well, not sure the water qould still be that clear and clean if I put 1000 trouts in it.

You want to make sure you don't put more fish in than the pond can support, even if you feed. Rainbows live about five years, brookies a little longer so stocking is constant. Rarely trout will spawn in a pond, you need to have a good flow of water for that. Also watch the herons they will clean out a pond and if they don't the martins and beavers will!

Salt will be valuable. I have read about sources, and it is not that easy to find in some areas. Hickory tree roots have a little, so one can harvest those roots and boil it for dark salt crystals in a pinch. Anyone else know where to obtain salt except blood?

I had to throw out two bottles of bleach the other day. Somehow the caps were loose. Bleach has to be kept tightly capped or it ruins. I could tell by sniffing these bottles that the chlorine was gone.

Also baking soda. You can do lots of stuff with it including brush your teeth.

We also have a wheat mill and grind our own corn and wheat berries for bread. Berries last a lot longer than ground wheat.

I have a good water flow from springs ans about 10 feet of water in the pound. I know heron, martin and beaver are an issue. These and musk rats... I had my shares........ That why I want to wait untill Me or at least the wife is here full time.... To control them....

So far I have rainbow trout in there. Wich is the only native trout to the area. The one in the are wild trout that were catch in a river near by. Maybe 100-200 were put in the pound 5 years ago. The do spawn cause there is somewhat new baby fish in the pound. The ain't much big trout in it and we won't survive more than 1-2 week on the pound but I guess it is better than nothing. And the pound is a good fresh water supply. Sure needs to be filtered but, even if it would be for everything except drinking and cooking....

So all, add this to your list, a stock pound is a must to be self-sufficient :p

See Jesse.....Your statement quoted above is your admission that you would steal my bread....and I suspected you would and will take steps to prevent you from stealing my bread....Now you can call this projection or any other Freudian term you desire...I call it self preservation....You will do it at all costs and I recognize that ...and will guard against it...so you need to take bread from someone else or figure out a way to make your own...

i agree.. like trade, or mutual help.

in an eoc situation.. i'm afraid people attacking me will have to be burried later. to get my bread forceably.. you'll have to attack me. :)

The Mrs. and I went out to the farm Saturday and when we approached the pond....the huge Heron flew away...we have Bass and Bream stocked...wonder how many the Heron has left for us....The Heron and the Poachers that is....Two things are hard to keep private ...even if they are hidden on your property and not visible from the road...A Pond or Lake and a Swimming Pool.....It used to be easier to keep it private...but now with Google earth and other internet spy programs....everyone knows what you have....

Stock up on bleach too. Bleach degrades after 6mts. You want pool shock. only calcium hypochlorite as an active ingredient. It stores easy and is light weight, cheap also. Just watch the active ingredients.
Baking soda lots of good uses, salt thanks for that bit about hickory i didnt know that. I did see that some people will boil the bark and add sugar to make a syrup out of it.

You can use granular calcium hypochlorite to disinfect water.
Add and dissolve one heaping teaspoon of high-test granular calcium hypochlorite (approximately ¼ ounce) for each two gallons of water, or 5 milliliters (approximately 7 grams) per 7.5 liters of water. The mixture will produce a stock chlorine solution of approximately 500 milligrams per liter, since the calcium hypochlorite has available chlorine equal to 70 percent of its weight. To disinfect water, add the chlorine solution in the ratio of one part of chlorine solution to each 100 parts of water to be treated. This is roughly equal to adding 1 pint (16 ounces) of stock chlorine to each 12.5 gallons of water or (approximately ½ liter to 50 liters of water) to be disinfected. To remove any objectionable chlorine odor, aerate the disinfected water by pouring it back and forth from one clean container to another.
