How smart is your dog/cat?

A guy is driving around the back woods and he sees a sign in front of a broken down, shanty-style house: "Talking Dog For Sale." He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard.

The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there.

"You talk?" he asks.

"Yep," the Lab replies.

After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says "So, what's your story?"

The Lab looks up and says, "Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping.

"I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running. But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals.

"I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired."

The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.

"Ten dollars," the guy says.

"Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap??"

"Because the dog's a liar. He never did any of that stuff."

My nine strays have me well trained. In winter they all live in the house I bought for them and in summer they all hunt and are hardly ever home.

So true. My brother just HAD to have a "white" Golden, so he found a breeder who had some white goldens. He bought a male and that was the dumbest golden I think I've ever witnessed. It looked like a smaller version of a Great Pyrenees. did I mention he was duuuuuumb?

I prefer the darker red goldens.

look for the hunting line of goldens..not the show lines. My goldens are almost red in color. were agility masters...not dog show quality. those are generally pretty dumb.
I would agree with above post. Hunting Goldens and Show Goldens are 2 complete different breeds in todays world. Show goldens are large 100 lb plus and more on the white side. Typically good companion dogs but over breeding has caused some real bad ones to be out there. True hunting retrievers are small, max 75 pounds and are much redder, they have a more pronounced stop to there eyes and kind of look like a fox more than a dog.
I know back in the 80s I stayed on waiting list for 1 1/2 years for mine. Also had to give up breeding rights (AKC) and paid $ 600.00 for pup. A lot of money back then.
He ended up being ( after 2 years of professional training at $ 600.00 per month ) the youngest dog to qualify at AKC Master National. And the only Golden to do so for previous 3 years. Later on in life if he even saw me with camo on or shotgun he would freak out and paw at door until boat was loaded and he was in kennel in truck.
We have a saying down south that God gives a man one good dog per lifetime. And I know I have had mine.

I think that is a true saying. I have had a bunch of dogs, some really smart, and others as dumb as a box of rocks. My last dog was exceptional in every way and any other dog would be a comparison to her which would be unfair. The wife and kids have a dog but the dog is theirs not mine.

Later,
Dan

How is it a good idea to let a pack of dogs run loose and hunt? They run deer, chase cattle, attack sheep and kill domestic fowl.
