I have a 1992 40 HP Mitsubishi diesel dozer that is not charging. If I charge it, it starts and runs great until I have started it about 5 or 10 times- then the battery is low again. It has a battery cut-off so the battery is not connected when the dozer is turned off. The fan belt and generator (alternator?) look newish. I have the owner's manual, but not the shop manual.
Are there standard ways to check the charging circiut or do they vary too much from model to model?

If a 12V system, then with the engine running the DC voltage accross the battery should be around 13.5 -14.5 volts. If not then it is not charging. I am not familiar with your system to make any more specific suggestions than that.

There are a few things that could be wrong.
1. Alternator is inop.
2. Regulator is inop.
3. Bad connection.
4. Broke wire.
5. broke belt.
6. Slipping belt.

If your Mitsubishi dozer is like my Mitisubishi tractor the regulator is seperate from the alternator.

I would call around to some alternator/starter rebuild shops to see if they can test the alternator and regulator for ya.

BIG difference in a generator and an alternator. As you say its a '92, I'm gonna assume an alternator...Usually alternators have internal regulators.Suggest you pull it off the dozer and take it to an auto-electric place and have it tested. A rebuild should only be about $60 or so; new will be significant.... If it truely is a generator/6 or 12 volt you will most likely have an exteranl regulator. If you've had the battery out of the dozer recently, you probably need to polarize the generator. Before we go into that pls advise whether its an alternator or generator. BobG in VA

Check voltage at battery with the engine, and all accessories off. Start the engine. Read the battery voltage. If it is the same or lower then the charging system is not functioning.
