One of the things my area is famous for is the Johnston Gang. Infamous in the 70’s for being a theft ring stealing anything, but specialized in heavy equipment, trucks, tractors.
Ever see the movie “ At Close Range “ (Sean Penn, Christopher Walken)? Its about the Johnston Gang from Southeastern PA.

Good evening,

Just for info.
My small tractor Yanmar AF22 has been stolen during the night on October 2019.
Look what they did with their truck or trailer on my meadow barrier.
They didn't manage to cut the chain as it is from a forestry chain slasher and it is quite uncutable with a saw.

Do they act like this in US ?

Phil

Phil.

Sorry about your lost AF22. Will you obtain another Yanmar in the future? Upgrade to a AF120 maybe? Does insurance cover the lose?

My son also has a gate at his place. He keeps the tractor locked in a small shed (no windows), keeps the front axle raised and removes the front wheels. He stores the front wheels inside the house. He keeps his tractor unknown to others in the area. When asked about the tractor, he mentions it is borrowed from someone further along the road and he must return it by night fall.

Whoa! That’s some very dramatic theft prevention. I can’t imagine having to go through that ritual.

Hi Bmaverick,

My insurance applied 10% penalty for each year of owning the tractor. I had it for 9 years so I got 10 % of the price I paid for it.
I have the possibilty to buy another grey market tractor as many firms in Europe are selling them but I am considering the possibility to buy an official market tractor as it is easier for maintenance. I got a few problems with the AF22 in finding spare parts.
The problem is : those last tractors are much more expensive. So I have to wait or go for a loan. BTW AF120 is 12 HP AF22 is (was !) 22 HP

Hi Phil, Yes Fallbrook is a great place to live, just don't tell anyone or we will be over run. As far as tractors, many of the groves are planted on terrain too steep for tractors so most of the work os done by hand labor, thus the high immigrant population. The larger groves have what are called grove roads for harvesting that are built by small dozers such as John Deere 450's etc.
Sadly, due to the price of water and importation from the South the avocado industry here is dwindling and many groves are being cut down. There are still some tenacious farmers trying to develop less water dependent strains but they are having limited success. Many are trying other crops like pomegranates and grapes as well as other exotic crops.
Our property is only 6 acres and the previous owners let the avocados go too long for us to bring back any but a few for personal use. I use a Kubota B7800 for weed control and fire protection.

Hi Jim,,
Yes, I have heard that most of the avocadoes industry is now located in Mexico, BTW in the hands of narco cartels.
The avocado groves in Fallbrook looks like the avocado groves in Spain. Groves hilly and harvest done by immigrant population (from Africa in Spain), including water shortages. Very soon water will become the gold of 21th century.

My folks lived in Fallbrook for 20 years until mid 90's. Their neighbor had avocadoes and hired workers to pick them. Turned out to cost more to have them picked than what they brought in. That was the end of his neighbor's farming, after that is was just personal use.

Hi 3Ts,

That's it. Here Spain is still selling its avocadoes all over Europe.
The first reason is : Mexican and spanish avocadoes ripe at different seasons.
and the second spanish avocadoes are of higher quality as they don't need to travel a long way to come to the shops.

Based on that if you had the tractor for 11 years you would have ended up paying the insurance company when the tractor was stolen.

Supposed to get a visit from an unknown contractor (who never showed up). Made sure to close buildings and put stuff away. No need to advertise what you have or where it might be parked if you don't have to.

I knew a guy who proudly would show off his gun collection to anyone that showed an interest. Came home one day and every last firearm was gone.

Not so easy !

1) In France insurance is mandatory for each vehicle with an engine.
2) It stays you need to have an insurance for road accident or if your hurt somebody with the tractor.

These insurance guys are very smart !

Yes, the insurance companies have gotten the law makers to give them a guaranteed income but the insurance you mention is liability insurance which is different than insurance covering a stolen tractor which usually falls under comprehensive insurance. You might ask your insurance company if both types of insurance are required. If both types aren't required then at some point, depending on the value of the tractor, it would pay to drop the comprehensive part of the policy.
