I decided to drop the backhoe today so I could mount the new tiller and get the garden ready. After the tiller was on I noticed the turnbuckles on the lower arms rub the tires. It looked like I needed to loosen the pin brackets on the tiller and slide them in...so I did. I took a pic of this. Now, as long as the tiller is level nothing rubs....but when I till and make a turn or on unlevel ground the tiller will sway and the turnbuckles rub again. Should I move the brackets in more or is there some other adjustment I need to make to remedy this? :confused:

Ok, as a complete newbie not knowing what he's talking about, I'm taking a chance on being laughed off the forum. But here goes. Do you need the turnbuckles? Looking at the picture, It seems like they could be removed.

Judging by the shiny paint, this is probably the first time that tiller's been used. As such, I'd say that you need only make a one time adjustment of those pin brackets. Cat 1 lifts pins are typically 26"-27" apart, but I'm not sure if that's center to center - or an inside measurement.

At any rate, after relocating the lift pins you then reattach the lift arms. The side links may need adjustment to center the implement and to minimize side-to-side movement. It should follow straight behind, not offset - neither should it be wagging around back there like a tail.

I'm pretty new to tractoring as well so there may be better advice, but here goes. Park on some flat ground and then manually swing your tiller so that it is centered between the wheels and the turnbuckles have some clearance. Now, tighten up both turnbuckles so they become rather rigid. This should control the side to side swing of the tiller. Also, when the backhoe goes back on make sure they are good and tight or the backhoe will swing side to side as well.

No laughing here, this is how we learn...
The turnbuckles are needed so the implement will not sway back and forth causing even more problems with tire rub.

I agree with Kenny. Most the brackets inward, that your wrench is shown tightening.

Kinda strange that your turnbuckles are outside the lift arms. On my tractor and others I've seen, they're inside. You definitely need them to keep the implements from swaying.

If you don't want to create more marks on your paint by moving the brackets inward, then just turn the brackets over so the offset moves them in a little. It won't take much so if you move both sides by the amount of the offset, it should keep the chains off your tires.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. I measured center to center on the brackets and they are 32" apart. If they should only be 26"-27" then moving the brackets farther inward should solve the problem. I like the idea of flippin' the brackets to save the paint. I never even noticed that they were offset.
I'll make all these new adjustments in a day or two. I've already got my first mowing job so I had to drop the tiller and mount the new mower.
I'll start a new thread for the mower so you guys can make sure it is set up properly. No manuals came with the attachments....except the backhoe.

Nothing like a little self deprecation. It was well deserved. The turnbuckles in this case provide nearly ALL of the lateral stability to the 3ph. Removing them would be like removing the lines of a parchute just prior to use.

I'm only slightly exaggerating to prove a point ...
