Re: How to \"carry\" a rotary cutter?

You eliminate the swivel all together. The movement the you was getting from the swivel, you get from the chain.

Re: How to \"carry\" a rotary cutter?

Thanks JerryG - have to try the chain.
And thanks again JMIII - great reading and photo. I started out with the swivel down, then second guessed myself. I'm mowing a field tomorrow so I'll have to experiment with that top link as I go to get it where I want. If I have enough stuff in the barn I make up a chain also to try.

Edit: I been going through this so fast here that I took a few minutes (quite a few) to review the thread. The answers to my questions are all here in front of me. In my photos I have the swivel link facing upward instead of down (which is clearly stated in a couple posts). I found the Woods video from JMIII's post, and actually got to see how it is supposed to work in action.
I'll be able to sleep better now. And off to "hoggin'" in the morning. Armed with all the info I gathered here this evening, I think I'm ready to go. I'll post back tomorrow with my results.
Thanks so much for all your responses - this forum is fantastic!

Verrrry slow and careful use of the lever, visual observation, a little bit of luck, and/or check chains. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif That's the reason I much prefer tractors with position control.

Re: How to \"carry\" a rotary cutter?

Everything went fine today, thanks to you all. I had a job to do today, and I can't stand it if I don't have everything "just so" when I take off. Ran the brush hog for 3 1/2 hours straight in 2'-3' field grass. It pulled along just fine - didn't have to adjust anything except for my 3 point arms once in a while. It came out looking great, and I'm looking forward to more.
Just wanted to express my thanks to all that helped me last night - SUCCESS!

Re: How to \"carry\" a rotary cutter?

Could you post one more pic. of how you ended up positioning that U-shaped swivel link? It appears to have a stop block welded to it, as does mine, that is supposed to hit something and prevent it from extending too far forward.

Re: How to \"carry\" a rotary cutter?

I figured everyone would be sick of my photos by now......
Anyway, here it is.

I have no idea how it is supposed to go. I went through the instructions and pictures a couple times with no luck. I have a stick stuck in against the swivel to show about how I have it positioned when hooked up. I put the block the way the photo shows. My only reasoning is that if/when the swivel travels all the way back through, this block would hit the top link first thus maybe not damaging it. That is the only thing I can come up with. And, by the way, I made a pin so the swivel will travel through the A-frame. I felt this gave me more flexibility.

How have you positioned your swivel?

Re: How to \"carry\" a rotary cutter?

That's the angle I would have it, and yes, that u-shaped piece should be able to swivel back through the A-frame.

Re: How to \"carry\" a rotary cutter?

Ok, now I'm confused, when replacing your top link, what do you hook the chain to? Does anyone have any clear pictures of this?
