What is the beast way to see if the differential lock works? I press on it and I do not hear, feel or see any difference. I think I read a while back where someone had a problem with it. During the last snow I had to put into 4 wd to get out of a snow pile, the lock did not do anything. Both wheels spin regardless if the lock is in or out. I am missing something ?, sorry if this is stupid question.

Thanks

The diff lock will lock both rear axles together as long as you have the lever depressed. If it wasn't working only one wheel would be turning(spinning) while the other would not have power applied to it. Make sure both wheels are not moving before you engauge the diff lock or serious damage will result.

Hi,

I also have wondered about that...but I assume my differential lock does work because my tractor has moved in the snow after engaging it, when it was not moving [just spinning front and back wheels] before engaging the differential lock.

If I wanted to check mine, I would jack up the tractor so that one rear wheel was off the ground an inch. Maybe block the axle on that side with some wood...then first try moving in 2wd and would expect to see the rear tire that was off the ground spin and the tractor to just sit there.

Then I would engage the diff lock, and the tractor should move foward and pull itself off the wood which is holding the one rear tire up off the ground.

If the was the way things happened, then I would feel the diff lock was working properly...

Maybe someone has a simpler way... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A simple way to tell if your differental lock is working is to try to turn with it engaged, if it is engaged the tractor will want to continue moving in a straight line.

That's curious. On our backhoe, you don't have to actually stop and then press down, you just press down and use it. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I should also remind some people that I use a 580B case, not some kubota or whatever.

The only way I know after coming out of a with a load of soil or whatever that my lock is 'stuck' is becuase I go to turn and my tires won't turn. So, that's how "I" know.

From a guy that thought he really screwed his up,, Yep that's me.

I am not sure of the Kubota, but New Holland says you can loc it in while moving. Should only do it at slower speeds. The trick is don't do it if one wheel is stopped and the other is spinning. So stopped would be a safer way. Typically if I thik I am going to need it, before I get to the spot I just push it in.

As to check it. If you have individual brakes. Then push one side in while driving, if it dies the tractor down then it is locked in, if it starts to pull the tractor one way and one wheel starts to spin, then it is not locked in. Now my TC29D does have sensi-trac and I am not sure but I have found that when it automatically puts it in 4 wheel both back wheels will spin and one front.

Henro has a good idea on how to do it also but it involves jacking the tractor up. If you have a jack that is great, but I don't got a jack yet.

Operation of the BX's differential lock are not spelled out very well in the owners manual of the tractor. You have to push very lightly on the pedal while the tractors wheel's are spinning. It may take several wheel revolutions before you feel the differential lock actually engage. Whatever you do, never try to put alot of pressure on the pedal. We had a customer who couldn't engage the diff. lock, and he kept pushing harder until the fork broke off in the rear end. The fork then got wedged against the bottom of the rear end and broke the housing open. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Anyway's good luck to you & happy tractoring.....tractorman

I engage the differential lock while moving almost everytime. While it is rarely needed, when I know I need it, I engage it when moving (rolling) but not while one wheel is spinning and I am not moving. As mentioned, the easiest way to verify its engaged is to go into a turn, making the standard turn is virtually impossible. It will be obvious when both wheels are locked. Rat

Also, you better have your wheels spinning very slow when you try to engage! If you are already stuck and only one wheel is spinning you can cause damage to the power train.
