How to clear fallen tree safely?

/ How to clear fallen tree safely? #11
I would run a rope from a fork in the tree visible on the left of the picture to the fallen tree where it broke off.

Then run a rope from the tree visable about 20 feet behind the fallen tree on the right to the top of the fallen tree.

Then I would cut the rest of the tree where it broke off and let it fall/swing to the center of the road. Then cut it up.

Just from what I can tell, you have enough trees close by to tie a rope on the end near the fence, and one just that way in front of the broken part. If you can support that section with ropes, cut off just behind the break and the ropes should support the cut off piece, allowing you to ease it down to the road. John

from what I saw, I would probalby get rid of the LIMBS that are on top side of the tree (non-supporting ones right now) on both sides of the fence. once those limbs are off and out of the way, then take the top of the tree off cutting UP from the bottom about 12" back from fence on the road side... keep the feet & toes away form the end, don't mess with the BUTT/TRUNK end untill it is nearly all down, once it is cut by the fence the trunk will drop, be ready to bolt out of the way at any moment, cut one limb and remove it to a safe distance. biggest danger when cutting is getting tangled up in limb falls when the tree finally goes you can't get out of way / tripped up by limbs that are down on forest floor.

once the trun is on the road and still attached (or falls off) then you can keep cutting into firewood or what ever size you want for removal. if the trunk is still attached once it is cut at the fence, then you can cut into manageable sized chunks making cuts UP from the bottom, as the tree trunk cracks and starts to droop pull out the saw and step back. if it don't break all way cut a bit more or give it a bit of a kick. the 6' high is not that much of a danger but at the same token being carefull is definately required.

The take down.

I cut pieces off each end and got it off of the fence. Luckily the fence was not damaged. That barbed wire sure does stretch. Thanks again all. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I really don't know the answer...

But my first inclination would have been to get close to the fence with the loader and lift and push a bit...hoping that the tree would rotate on the base end...and around on to the trail, where I would then use the chain saw to make short work of it.

But since I am late on the answer...nothing to say but you did good...! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If it were me I would have thrown a chain over the part of the tree that was over the road, hooked it to the back of my tractor and pulled it down. If it tore the fence I'd fix it afteerwards.

I don't know what size tractor you have or if you have a FEL, but any 30 or 35 hp with a FEL can handle that saftely. Just put the bucket under where it broke off to see if it is loose, if it is then just slowly back up with it and get it on the ground.
