How to get rid of grass in Bermuda grass

I have about an acre that I planted in Bermuda grass about 3 months ago and I am having a problem with some type of grass invading my Bermuda. The grass gets about 3 ft tall and has a seed pod. It's not Bahia, I would guess it is some type of switch grass. Does anyone know what I can spray on this to kill it but not hurt my Bermuda?

Sounds like Johnson grass. I've seen people use a herbicide tube with rope wicks that hang down, mounted to a 3'point or FEL. You drive along and set the height so the rope wicks rub along the tall stems, but are above the coastal Bermuda.

Picture of the undesirable grass would help a lot, as well as information about your location/zone. There are many "over the top" herbicides that target certain weeds without affecting the turf, but you need to make a proper ID first. Picture would be helpful.

I like the rope wick applicator recommendation. You can buy applicators or build your own (e.g., http://caes2.caes.uga.edu/commodities/spray/pubs/documents/Aavimhowtomakearopewick.pdf)

I agree wick application might be best but you still need to know what the target grass is so that proper herbicide can be used. Why didn't you just mow it before it reached 3' and went to seed?

If the OP does have Johnson grass, mowing alone will not cure his problem -- it spreads both by seed and by rhizomes.

Well mowing certainly prevent's seed,and that's half the battle. You would also be amazed how well mowing control's Johnson Grass. During periods of feed shortage,many J.Grass hay meadows are destroyed by grazing cattle on them. But enough of that,op hasn't posted pictures or told us what kind of weed he's dealing with. Come to think of it,what would one want with an acre of Bermuda they don't mow?
