How to get rid of horses?

Hey Eddie... do you have any others in the family to help with the animals... mom, dad or the kids?

My Dad always liked horses and would volunteer to help my brother and Dad liked doing it as long as it was not an everyday thing and it really helped my brother when he got a weekend job and Dad would feed and spend time with the animals... the horses quickly took a liking to Dad and would see spot him and wait... always had a treat... apple, carrot or sometimes just a grocery bag of fresh cut lawn...

For some time now, I have thought there is a secret out there -- i.e. there are two Eddie Walkers. Every time I read one of his posts I become even more convinced that no one person could do all that he does. So c'mon Eddie, fess up -- are there really two of you?

I'm amazed he gets as much done as he does as still has time to hang out here. There have been times in my life when I was getting a lot done, more than now, and I wasn't spending my time posting on the internet!

Eddie has clones. That may not be the Real Eddie scratching the pig's nose. The Real Eddie may be in the Bahamas.

I find those not camped out in front of the TV have lots more discretionary time...

When I lived in Washington the home did not have TV or Internet or Cell... only radio and a dial up telephone service... it was geography/location and proved to be a problem in later years when offering the home for rent. As a sidebar... I have had families move because of this and later tell me they now miss the unplugged lifestyle... instead of everyone being glued to their smartphones.

These were some of my most productive periods... also went to bed earlier on average.

My brother is a very busy guy in a high pressure job... I doubt he views an hour of TV in a week... and that goes for things like Netflix... etc.

I've managed property for 35 years... always found it interesting that the tenants with the all the phone lines and later with the cable and internet entertainment packages increased as the household income decreased... the largest consumers from my experience are those with assisted housing.

My Dairy farmer Grandparents never owned a TV and only had a phone late in life when they were in their 60's... they never missed the crop report on the radio and read a lot... every night before retiring they both would read at the kitchen table.

We are in the Thoroughbred horse business, and a lot of your assertions are correct. Concern for 'free' being taken care of is a real concern.

One way to address this issue is to 'lease' the horse for a nominal fee, simply to maintain ownership, but to have control should the new 'owners' not take care of the horse in a reasonable way. In this case, all control and care goes to the new owners, but if they are mistreating the horse, you have the legal ability to take it back. This serves 3 purposes.

1st, it keeps people from taking the horses and selling them to a kill pen.
2nd, it keeps people who have little thought about taking care of the horse, from inquiring about the horse. 3rd, it 'could' allow your wife to have more comfort in letting them go.

Alot of Tbred horses are 'leased' for $1 with these types of legalities in mind. Typically, they have a lease of 1-3yrs, which allows for both your and the new owners comfort level. If at any time, you choose to 'release' them from the lease, they can have the horse as their own, free and clear.

Don't get too caught up in the 'breeding' of the horses. That can mean a lot, but it can also mean nothing at all. There are a lot of 'Royally bred' horses that aren't worth a $1 on the market, simply because they can't run or 'do whatever' their breeding says at which they should excel. It can help, make no mistake, but 3yr olds are unlikely to have proven anything that would make their breeding mean anything. Take that into consideration as well, but don't get caught up in it.

Another option is to ask for help from a 'horse rescue'. They are unlikely to take them from you, but might be able to guide you in finding a home for your horses.

Good luck, strength and peace to your wife and family.

Eddie, prayers here also for your wife. That's the most important thing now.

But, maybe the old boy I mentioned above is right! I had no idea horses were hard to give away. Across road neighbor has 5 and 2 donkeys. I get to watch them.

A crying wife is tough to overcome. Good Luck. Best thing I can think of is to encourage another horse lover - a person she knows and respects - to at some point slip in some comments that it is not fair to spirited horses to be neglected and they need and deserve to be where they can work, be worked with, and be attended to.

Another option may be to see if there is a neighbor who has some acreage that he wants to have grass taken down - they may be willing to keep the horses just for that purpose.

You should keep the pig though.

Eddie, you might want to contact Safe Haven Equine Rescue in Bettie. mysite I know your horses aren't abused or neglected but they may be able to give you some advice on how to find them new homes.

Karen and you are going through a rough patch for sure right now but it will work out. My Sister went through what sounds like about the same battle with colon cancer. Several years later and still cancer free, it was just a rough bump in the road to her now. Those days will come to her and you as well. I will keep the two of you in my prayers.

Eddie I am sorry about your wife's cancer. You were on my mind last week as I was visiting my baby sister in Texas and she needs help with a pond. I do pray for your wife and you. The support person has it hard, physically and emotionally.

On the horses, you know your area and neighbors I have no doubt. Maybe there is a youth group from school or your local church who would benefit by helping with the horses. You might still own and have them there but they do the work for riding, training and so forth. Ask your high school Ag Teacher if they know of such a group.

I do agree when we hear such as lets get ride of "all" it can be lets give up being said.

Again Eddie, will be praying for you two.
