Shoved a big chunk of red maple in the stove last night shortly before bedtime , - 15C this morning out but still warm and comfy in here and a thick layer of hot coal left in the stove to keep the fire going.
Mixed hardwood: = mostly spruce, balsum and a bit of maple and birch.
I learned when trying to build coals in my beanhole not to use wood called "Ash"... In hindsight it should have been obvious,.Shoved a big chunk of red maple in the stove last night shortly before bedtime , - 15C this morning out but still warm and comfy in here and a thick layer of hot coal left in the stove to keep the fire going.

Anyone recommend a good book for identifying tree species?
Really? The red/silver I have leaves zero coals for the morning. The ash I was burning last year was much better. The sugar maple I just got on Sat is WAY better. I almost forgot what its like to have proper firewood
