Shoved a big chunk of red maple in the stove last night shortly before bedtime , - 15C this morning out but still warm and comfy in here and a thick layer of hot coal left in the stove to keep the fire going.
how to identify between soft maple and hard maple logs?

Mixed hardwood is any combination of maple, birch, oak, beech, ash, elm, poplar, ironwood etc. Anyone adding softwood filler (which is VERY easy to tell from any hardwood) should be reported to local authorities for fraud.
Mixed firewood is a different story and is wide open to what could be in it.
I learned when trying to build coals in my beanhole not to use wood called "Ash"... In hindsight it should have been obvious,.

Really? The red/silver I have leaves zero coals for the morning. The ash I was burning last year was much better. The sugar maple I just got on Sat is WAY better. I almost forgot what its like to have proper firewood

The one I showed first post of page 4 is pretty decent. Since it is localized for here, not all species mat be applicable

I have no clue about silver maple save for the fact they mostly grow along riverbanks and swamplands, theres none of them here but my reds come from finer sites and grow in tandem with sugar maples, yellow birch, beech and cherry hence why I whack most of them.
I agree sugar maples is far superior to reds, not so sure about ash though, they may generate more heat ? but in my experience they dont coal up as much as red maples.

LOL, I never noticed that until I drove it in my tractor the first time! I actually had my box blade bounce up and a scarifier tooth grab one of the lugs of my tires once. I have family in town this weekend and we're skiing on Saturday, but Sunday afternoon is good, they're driving back to T.O so they leave fairly early.
