I've got a bermuda grass lawn surrounding the house, and when the sod guys laid it, it came out kind of lumpy. They said it would self level after a few rains. That was a year ago. Now, I've still got what feel like potholes when I'm driving my small lawn tractor. Somebody told me to pour sand in the low lying areas and the grass would grow up through it. I find that surprising, but am willing to try anything. I'd really like to just have a nice, smooth green area around the house. Any ideas?
thanks,

anthony

Have you tried using a real heavy lawn roller just after a good rain? That might help you take down some of them high spots if you can roll over the lower areas.

Anthony, I think the sand idea is what most people do; in fact, what I've done myself.

what do you do? just pour it in the low spots and the grass grows through it? Are you talking "sand" or like topsoil, etc.?

thanks. anthony

I've always used fine, sifted compost or soil from my garden. Sift it through 1/4 inch mesh hardware cloth to break up any lumps. The trick is to put in enough to build up the soil without killing the grass. Just a half inch every few weeks and you should be OK. If you want to go more than that, I will fill a low spot and plant new seed very early in the spring or early fall. Usually fills in in a few weeks.
