How to protect a bearing from the elements

Pine would that bearing also be considered a babbit bearing made soley of a machined aluminum most all cane grinders used these and you could make it home if need be speed was never a problem with cane grinders and just another note on marine starter applications especially the bigger ones all use the shielded bearing because of salt problems and yes if any go to a government surplus auction crawl under vehicle and see what it looks like some of the stuff i i have fixed for them has only been killed by salt because they do not wash then vehicle off at all ever

It must have been in the 70's when SC began requiring tarps on open trucks. What seemed to be homemade tarp systems were all over the place and were very interesting to observe.

state of georgia requires tarps on any dump truck and a special built tarps for asphalt but i see a lot of open body trucks on the highway that the tarps on them are more like threads sewn together but state of georgia uses manual crank tarp systems on all 5 yard dumps they have probably 200 in use now the systems even the manual are kinda costly and electric systems can be several thousand dollars

One way to keep crud out of a bearing is to put a felt washer against it. Not possible in all situations of course.
