Levelling the area should be easy to do since you said you already have a laser level. If its the one that rotates, then use a yard stick to measure down to the ground where the mark shows up on the stick mark that height, just make all the measurements the same. find the spot you want to be the lowest then make all the rest match, plus the amount added for the slope from back of shed to front for drainage.

I would drive rebar down the middle of the pad spaced a few feet apart these can be used for helping get the right height in the center and provide some anchor to the ground to keep the pad from shifting.

When do you plan on starting this? I'm taking the tractor to Ashland/Montpilier area on Monday. Depending on how long it takes to dig a few stumps and level the area I could swing by to help prep the area.

Istinthot,

You are a totally awesome guy!

I have a small laser level that attaches to a stud finder. it is great for installing shelves etc. Might not be enough for this job.

I have some scrap rebar, but it is in like 20' lengths (I do have a borrowed cutting torch we could use to cut stuff up).

I have been planning starting this weekend, (I may need to cut down a crepe myrtle and grind the stump), this idea of changing to a concrete pad (has made me pause unfortunately.

You are totally welcome to stop by on Monday. I have vacation Monday and Tuesday, and I am working on my honey-do's and tractoring all weekend.

You & your tractor are welcome any time sir! I will PM you my contact info.

I did not get as much sleep today as expected. I will let you know in the morning if I'm going to make it out there. I have to work tonight so will be up all night then digging pad at buddies place. May take a nap while he does some clearing then head that way in afternoon if you will be playing outside.

If you head over, we will definately play in the dirt sir.

I have not gotten any quotes on the slab yet, but I suspect it makes too much sense and I will be going that direction.

I threw a chain on the Stihl yesterday, and today was my oldest daughter's 13th birthday so I did not get any seat time.

Look for my PM with contact info.

RippySkippy,

Unless I'm misunderstanding things, I need to make a 20x10 box, and hang the 10' (9' 9") joists inside it.

My concern is the outer 4 boards, two at 10' and two at 20'. I did not want to kluge the outer frame.

Make sense? Am I goofing this up?
David

Those outer boards are not load bearing. They get nailed to the ends of the joists and are the closeouts. Just butt a pair of 10 ft 2x's and fasten them together with a Simpson tie plate.

My experience with 2x lumber greater than 12 ft in length has not been happy (warped, bent, corkscrewed).
