How to "relax" and "let it go"

/ How to "relax" and "let it go" #51
FWIW, After watching my wife of thirty plus years, fret and worry over everylittle thing, pass on from cancer in 2009 at 51 yrs; I decided then and there to relax a little more and enjoy life while I still can.
So, I bought my acreage, my tractor, and got to it. Life is far to short to be consumed by perfection, so I, along with my new wife as of Sept 2013, will build on our property as time and funds allow, and spend our time enjoying what we call "our little piece of heaven".

Just my thoughts,

Dave

I work a day job then come back to my farm every day. When I hit the back roads home I relax a little. Then I get home and pick a project that needs done. I have a horse boarding farm so in addition to the regular honey dos there is always someone that needs my attention. My wife and daughter take good care of me. I come in at dark suppers ready. I eat and carry my clean clothes upstairs. Pretty much all I have to take care of is outside.

If someone says oh I don't won't to hold you up I reply I didn't plan on doing anything and I got most of it done. Saw that here on TBN. I'm trying to get the garden started but yesterday instead of planting potatoes I had to take care of boarders and barn duties. Here's some pics of my afternoon. Sure beats planting potatoes.

I just have two things:

1. View Toby Keith's music video "My List" on you tube.

2. Get into a vigorous exercise routine you like to do. I play tennis hard several days a week. Make it something you like (so you keep at it), something that requires total focus and something that takes all your energy so when you are done you are exhausted. You will be amazed at how well you feel just focusing on one thing for an hour or so and how much more clearly you can view your problems.

Good luck.

We dairy farmed until 1996. I still feel the need to keep at something until it's done, start many projects at the same time, get up earlier on vacation than i do to go to work. It's been almost 10 years since I've done any traveling. My wife says I don't understand the concept of vacation. In my defense, I am doing what I love to do: gardening on a large scale, feeding 5 households, building 1/2 scale machinery to use with my Kubota tractors and make work easier for myself, bartering welding jobs for things I need, and enjoying every minute of it! I don't care to travel. My closest friends are also the closest living to me. I have great relationships with the people who do the crop farming and dairying on our farm. I love to help out when I'm needed. I have a couple friends who are a lot like me and can't slow down. I stopped making excuses for being busy a long time ago. My wife works long hours several days a week, so, at 57, I'm learning to cook, since I get home sooner. tlj87, don't fret about things. Be happy that you care about your home enough to keep it nice..

I have been unemployed since mid January. I have noticed that I am much more relaxed now. I have a mile long list of stuff to do and it doesn't even bother me. I just work off the top of the list at my pace. No big deal.

When I was working I stressed out over everything that "had" to get done. Honestly, I was more productive when working but these last 3 months have taught me to look at the big picture. Small things that you think have to be done don't even show up in the big picture.

I do need to find a job though......cleaning house to keep my working wife happy is eating into my project time!

It is said we should seek the middle ground, but humans seem to gravitate to one extreme or the other!

Too much work or too lazy

Too much drink or none at all

Too much acreage, too many tractors and things, or sell everything and live in a hole in the wall!

The list could go on and on.

Very true. I have a good friend in Colorado that complains about not having anything to do. He sold off all his projects over the years because "you just don't need all that stuff". Now he struggles with all the idle time.

Don't worry about the small stuff........ It's all small stuff.

I don't know if this will connect with you or not but here goes. I was the kind of guy that had to get it done and if I had to go from the shop to the tractor shed I ran. Couldn't help it. Stayed awake half the night figuring out how to do something that I didn't have time to do and got up and did it again. One day I was praying and I felt like God was saying my rushing was not trusting Him. It took a while but I finely slowed down. Not trying for push anything just wanted to answer your question.:2cents:eek:

I am 51 this year. I started noticing that Im slowing down and I hurt badly when I do "projects". My Wife is almost completely disabled. She is still able to operate my wallet on command but not much else. I have three children; a girl who will be 21 this year who is attending the local college and wants to be an attorney; a boy who will be 19 this year and just missed getting his eagle scout (I spent decades in scouting as an adult and am a Eagle Scout myself) so that was a crushing blow, last child is going to be 12 this year, she is an incredible artist. I have no lack of things to do here, I am chief cook and bottle washer, carpenter, maid, and mechanic. I have four vehicles that require something each weekend (I have a rear axle seal job coming up on a 12 year old SUV, and I recently upgraded the brake systems on it as well as performing the maintenance on a 13 year old cavalier that still get 30 MPG) Let's say that it gets overwhelming sometimes....Many of the chores go without doing, some I do cause I enjoy them more than others. The one thing I do for me and sometimes playing hookie when I should be performing other jobs is fire up my tractor (little BX) and drive to the back of the property. I make dirt move around for fun... I could be doing so much more with my time. I have a demanding job that often entails going to a new city each week. But each weekend I can run the tractor is my reward. If its raining I work in my garage doing the piddling stuff. The place aint a mansion but I am closer to where I want to be than where I was. I know in my heart I will never get to retire. That is simply not in the cards for me. But as long as I can fire up the "garage dragon" as my son calls it and go digging, plowing, mowing, I am relatively happy. I can only hope someone speaks kind words of me when I am not here any longer.
