How to remove 2" of topsoil in pasture?

ok, I found a buddy that has a 60-gallon PTO sprayer. I am going to borrow it. The question I have now is what chemical mixture should I use. I really am not opposed to killing everything in the pasture and starting from scratch. I just got a nice disc harrow, so I can put it to good use turning the ground over and putting out some grass seed. What do y'all think I should use???

Around here we use glyphosphate (RoundUp-type) herbicides to kill off everything in a field. My chemical of choice in that class is Bucanneer Plus. I don't believe it will work against prickly pear cactus, though; for that you need to use something like Grazon or Tordon 22K. I also don't know if either of those can be tank mixed with Bucanneer Plus so be sure to ask the appropriate questions of your ag chemical supplier or extension agent.

Alright, I have an agent from the Clemson Extension coming out to take a look at it first o next week. I hate to wait that long. I'd really like to spray this weekend, bt I reckon if I want to do it right I should wait for him to come take a look at it. Thanks for all the help y'all, I will let you know what I figure out.

Ultimately, that's probably your wisest course of action. Be sure to pick his brain about everything you can think of regarding your property while he's there.

I turned my bucket on edge and used it smiliar to a bulldozer and pushed the prickly pear into large piles... I then began a spraying program (google prickly pear control) using a blue dye with the spray. Spray the piles and the individual plants... it's a project that will take years. You won't rid yourself of PP but can manage to control it... Good luck,

I'm going to wait to see what the agent from the extension has to say, but right now I am really liking what I am reading about an herbicide called "Surmount." It is a mixture of Tordon 22k and some other stuff that is supposed to work well on cactus. I am afraid you are right Dougster, and I may be buying my own sprayer before this is all said and done in order to do regular maintenance and keep the cactus population in check. Thanks again for the help everyone.

That Tordon is potent stuff, Be carefull about runoff to areas where you want to grow other things. I used some 20 years ago on Multifloral Roses and that old version will about sterilize the soil for a while. Ken Sweet

You're more than welcome to come down to SC and harvest all the prickly pear out of my pasture to make all the jelly you want. Seriously, in my search for how to kill this crap I have read a number of people wanting to plant it, or protect it for whatever reason. I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would want this junk in their yard, pasture, field, wherever. It frustrates me that someone planting the crap somewhere in my vicinity may be the root cause of my huge nuisance!
