Nice work. For future reference, throw a blanket or jacket over the come-a-long or winch cable to absorb the tension if the cable should happen to break.

Thanks for the blanket tip. Will definitely do that next time. The block hoist looks good and agree it's worth the $. Since it's called a "hoist" is 3 tons the pulling power or the lifting power? For come-a-longs it's my understanding their rating is pulling power. How they rate these various devices is confusing. Been there, done that re dunking tractor. Gives you a sinking feeling in the stomach as the tractor sinks into the pond!

No problem. Not sure on pulling vs. lifting, but do know that unless they specify lifting overhead as purpose it's usually not recommended for same.
Yikes- can't imagine how i'd feel if it had gone over into the pond!
Have driven a bunch of mowers in- thought was actually my wife and kids who accomplished the task, except once, I seem to remember. I did however loose my Stihl 011 off my pond raft while attempting to do what you just did: trying to cut a canopy off a poplar that fell into our pond, from the water side.:confused3:
Had saw chain locked and running while I tried to get a branch up onto the raft when things went south. All I saw was the saw slide off the raft and the bubbles of it's sinking! Not the best way to treat my favorite go to saw.
I did get it running again, but it did end up in my get to it someday and fix it pile.
Finally got the rest of the tree out with a mini-ex the following summer. I was on the pond raft in November, so I'm still debating if I should have taken the plunge after the saw!? Next time - maybe.
