It is hard to tell where it is leaking from. Have you tighten the connection? Is it leaking from the steering valve ,connection or the hose? When you turn the steering wheel with the tractor running can you see where it is leaking? Be careful it is under high pressure.

Thanks for the reply. It's dark out here and I didnt check well and assumed that it was the fitting. But it is not the fitting and when I turn the wheel I cant actuall see the oil coming out of anywhere but the neck has oil beed of oil coming down it. I'm not sure how to proceed to check any further. Any help would be great.

I currently have the same leak and have just ordered a seal kit for the steering unit. It might be a few weeks before I get a chance to tear it apart, but I'll let you know how it goes. From the amount of grime insde my panels, it has been leaking for a long time, but I have never added any fluid to it.

If I watch my fluid level can I still run the machine?

I suspect that mine has leaked since the day I bought it.

It looks like it may be coming from the seal around the steering wheel shaft. It should be OK to use if it is a slow weep. If it is coming from around the steering shaft then it would be to reseal the steering box. I guess I will have to quit using my steering wheel for a grab handle.

Did the steering wheel get banged? Looks like the rear panel has some damage. I traded my GC2310 in with 500 hours, mine didn't have that problem. Hope you get the leak fixed easily. plowking

It looks like the leak must either coming from the crimped fitting(s) on the end(s) of the hose(s), or else from the steering unit itself, called the "steering orbit roll" in the service manual, and the "steering controller" in the parts book (part# 4265075M92). The service manual description of removing the controller sounds fairly straightforward, but-- perhaps you could begin by having the hoses checked at a hydraulics shop? (I'd bet on the hose fittings.) It looks as though the steering controller is a non-fixable item.

That is a very good idea on any vehicle.

I have seen full size p/u trucks come in to my shop with the steering wheel ready to fall off. One brand in particular more than others. I won't mention their name. But, they are domestic, and its not Ford or Chevy.

Steering wheel controller is going to cost around $850. Better hope we never need one.

Does anyone have the instructions for repairing the steering controller. My dealer sent me a reseal kit ($54.00) and told me that the seals could be changed.

It's good to know that a seal kit is available for the steering control--however, although the service manual does cover removal of the controller, it has no details at all on disassembly/repair of the device itself....

That is why we have service techs. They are required to have training every year. We have at least one in a class every month.

I had the same problem wit my tractor. 200hours. 700 dollar out of pocket fix at the dealership.

If I would have known that it would not be covered, I would have bought the 70 dollar seal kit and done it myself.

Hi there,

I have the exact same leak and my steering box looks just like the photo posted above by ad11ad. I have called my dealer and they were unable to look up an info on this steering box. Can someone post the part number(s) for the seal kit and also comment if it is a do it yourself project for a non professional but very competent guy with lots of mechanical experience but no hydraulic experience. Perhaps there is a tear down photo and/or procedure someone would be kind enough to post....

I too used my steering wheel as a handle when getting on/off the tractor... won't be doing that anymore.

I will continue to use the tractor since it is leaking enough to be annoying but not much more then a mess (little dripping).

My dealer was able to send me a schematic of the unit and it was no problem to change the seal out.

It is unfortunate that manufacturers do not warn users against the "pulling on the steering wheel to mount" issue.

That could save at least some, (those who actually read the cautions page in the manual), from this hassle.

Hopefully, we have prevented a few over the years, on here.

I would have probably been there myself, had I not seen steering column damage over the years in our shop, from people doing it to cars and trucks.

I'm sure I caused mine to start leaking, as I used to hang the steering wheel to pickup toys in the yard, while mowing. After the first summer of mowing, I noticed the steering wheel was really loose, as I had ripped the nylon/rubbert bushings which hold the steering cylinder to the frame. I changed them when I replace the leaking seals. I have never done this with my new 2610 and always make sure anyone who borrows it does not use the wheel to get on and off.

Ray- I count myself one of the lucky ones who learned --on this forum-- about the steering wheel issue. No worries, no leaks @ 150 hrs!
