How to save hummingbirds in my barn?

After having Hummingbirds in my garage quite a few times, I did some reading. They are attracted to the color red and the pull handles on my gargae doors attracted them. I tie them up out of the way so they can't be seen as easily. They also tend to always fly up and not down. After watching one struggle with all the doors open I caught it in a lunchbox and released it. Happens a few times of year and I've only found one dead. They are so small and use so much energy that they don't last long without food or rest. Hopefully they made it ok as they are fascinating to watch.

Dargo, Mikim was having the same problem and solved it by finding large screens to fit his oversized doors so he could keep them open. Here is a link and a picture:

We have the same problem with our garage. My wife also suggested the screens but it seemed like more hassle than not so I try to keep the doors closed. Being that my garage is junked up, when I have a project going, I keep my job site radio by the door with some tunes blasting away. That seems to help.

We keep a number of hummingbird feeders going. Last year the average count was around 30 but this year only about half that. Great entertainment but man can they suck up the suger water.

My garage also has high ceilings which traps them. I open a window and hang a feeder close by. The zoom in on that and then zip out of the window.

Do you know that a good many of the ruby throated humminbirds that are common in the east migrate the roughly 500 miles of open water over the Gulf of Mexico?

I also have red pull handles. Have to change them out then maybe throw some sheets or something over my red tool cabinets to see if that helps.

Like smelling the flowers, watching natures spectacle can be quite rewarding.
