how to secure a tractor on a trailer

/ how to secure a tractor on a trailer #11
I put clevis on all four corners to make it easier to hook to.. I trailer mine everytime I use it.. I use 4 = 5,000lbs 3inch straps with added Cordura Sleeves. With the clevis hooks and straps I dont have the straps contact thing sharp edges. I did weld D-hooks to my trailer at the best spots so I would not get any rubbing.. I found that shippers supplies link below was the best place to get straps from.. Any size, color and length.. chains are stronger BUT I like my setup

Cord. Excellent post. I would like to add on to what you have already posted with what is required here in Texas (and it does make sense). Loads have to be bound with a minimum of two chains and once every 10 feet in load length. The total load rating of your binders and chains must be 1-1/2 times the the total weight of the load. For vehicles, it has to be bound at all 4 corners and implements must also be bound.

I just purchased a 25' tandem dually GN (2-10k axles with breaks) and a 2005 John Deere 310G TLB. When binding a backhoe and/or loader, it is required that you bind at all four corners and also one chain over each bucket and one accross the stabilizer pads to ensure that they do not drop if there is any hydraulic failure. That is a total of 7 chains and binders.

And definitely / / - \ \ is the way to go. I attached a couple of pics. As you can see, I thought one chain accross the back 2 corners and one for the front 2 corners was OK. It is NOT OK. I will be purchasing a few more chains. They are all grade 70 3/8" transport chains which has a higher rating than grade 43 high test. The laws are hard to pin down so I spoke to some people who regularly transport ag equipment.

Also check your DOT for drivers license requirements and trailer vehicle inspection requirements. If it is tagged ag, then there are some exemptions depending on tow distance. Here in Texas, there are different commercial license requirements for more than 10K lbs, 26K lbs and also if you are carrying passengers or hazardous materials. Maximum load width is 8' 6" and maximum height is 14'.

Safe towing.

I have a Ferguson to 30 tractor that I want to hayl on my 16 ft. trailer. What is the best way to do that and should I leave my heavy box blade on it.
Thanx

At the risk of offending some, I have gravitated to using strap based tire tie downs that slip over the top of the tires and then through a ring and then into a ratchet.

I have a set of four that I have used often to tie down my car. Last fall I used them to tie down my JD 2720 on the 200 mile trip from the farm to the house for the winter.

I also used a chain/binder on the loader but I have to say the tire tie downs were the most secure way to tie down the tractor I have tried.

I usually have trouble getting chains tight enough and when I use them I stop often and tighten them because they seem to develop slack as I go.

my .02 cents. mileage may vary.

The photo is the way I use the straps on my little car.

Jim

Beautiful 8N Philip

Thanks. It is a 1950. Dad purchased in 1960 from original owner. The last time Dad was on it was around 1990, so it has been mine since then (passed on in 1993). Third generation is in the background now. It is now semi-retired since I got the Kubota in 2009. Philip.

James150, how do the over the tire straps work on the big rear tires of tractors? Do they wrap far enough around to hold the tractor from slipping out from under them in a crash? I prefer that style for cars and buggies, but haven't used them for tractors.

I use ratchet straps on many loads. However, I secure the tractor (TLB) with chains.

Several guys I know have been pulled by DOT and given a waring about using straps. Seems DOT around here wants chains.

I put the front chain through a secure place on the front of the tractor and D-rings on the trailer. I then back the tractor up till the chains are tight and lock the brake down.

I then feed the back chain through a clevis on the back of the tractor and chain-bind it tight on a backward angle.

I never tie to the front or rear bucket for tie-down as a hydraulic failure would mean the tractor is no longer tied down.

The front bucket rests on the trailer deck and the rear bucket/arm is safety-chained to the tractor.

So far, the tractor has not moved or come lose. If I have to travel down a rough road (like to my father-in-laws farm), I recheck the chains before going further.

If I need to stop for any reason (bathroom, food, gas, etc) I always check the load before going on.
