I can see that I've had a different experience that some of you. When settling my mother's estate my sister's and I divided the work up and didn't worry about it. I wasn't going to cheat and neither were they.

Both of my kids work hard and have good jobs. Both their husbands work hard and have good jobs. I want to set them up as my parents tried to set me up. And they know I expect them to do the same.

Grandkids don't ask for material things. They don't want toys, they want to DO things with us. Take me fishing, take me swimming, take me to the boat show. Granna, if you are making a cake can I come and help you? Well, except for the teenager. But they aren't quite human anyway.

How could it be that three siblings could be so different? Raised by the same parents in the same house.....

If you ever figure this out, let me know. My siblings & I are the same way and it appears that our kids are as well.

I've also noted that as kids grow up, turn into adults and mature, they change. Our daughter when in high school didn't want anything to do with us - more so than the usual. Now, grown, married and has a kid. She's the one who keeps in contact with us the most. Our youngest son who did a lot of stuff with us doesn't keep in touch with us anymore. Seems as when they mature, they change 180* in personality.

You have to graduate from college or you don't get the money.
You have to hold a job for 5 years or you don't get the money.
You have to get married in the (insert religion of choice here) church or you don't get the money.
Boxers or briefs or you don't get the money.

What do you care? You're dead, and they're going to despise your memory even more if you make them jump through hoops. You can't take it with you, so make them wait for it after you croak?

I can understand if they're juveniles, or mentally unstable. But once they're adults, let them be adults and make their own choices.

Adults can make bad decisions, lawyers can make bad choices, doctors can make bad decisions. Sometimes life experience is all that we have and we all live a little differently. Becoming a certain age is not a guarantee someone is done growing up.

On wow. A few years ago, my SO was taking dressage lessons on one of the barn owners horses. The horse spooked, throwing her off, breaking 2 ribs and a left arm. Never heard a word from the barn owner until the monthly lesson payment was skipped (no written contracts). Even then, no inquiries even made about how are you, just “where’s the money”.

I would have replied with "Who is your insurance company"? or maybe "My attorney has instructed me to hold off on that for now..."

And they'd have replied that you can't sue for horse riding injuries. That's common knowledge. Of course, you may be able to find a lawyer to try and take it, but most places have you sign a waiver regarding horse riding injuries before you start.

You are much better off making those type inquiries using a wriitten, proof of delivery system. Heat of the moment phone calls rarely get results.
