Sixdogs, thanks for this! Not sure our local Costco has the 100% PB, but I'll sure try to remember to check next time I'm there. It's where I get my Jif Extra Crunchy, btw. :licking:

Well let us know how a JIF connoisseur compares the old standby to the "natural" stuff. enquiring minds want to know.

A peanut fell on the railroad track

His heart was all a flutter

Along came a great big choo-choo train

Toot toot peanut butter

I've had a membership in Sam's Club since the first one showed up in Dallas, but never in Costco. And now we have two Sam's Club stores closer than any Costco, so I probably won't ever shop at Costco even though I've heard good things about Costco.

Supermarkets have 100% peanut butter. Just find one with two ingredients: peanuts and salt. If you can't find it, PM me and I'll find somewhere near you that carries it.

Yeah, I was in the nearest Walmart this morning and they had several brands, with the ones labelled "organic' priced a lot higher of course. We used to buy Jif and then started buying the store brand (Great Value) without really looking at the labels and all the brands. Anyway I bought a small jar of Smuckers with ingredients listed just as roasted peanuts and less than 1% salt. I'm going to experiment with stirring it with a dough hook, then experiment with taste testing to see whether we want to change brands or not.

/ How to stir peanut butter in 30 seconds. #46
OK, just completed a highly scientific experiment. As mentioned above, the Smuckers ingredients are listed only as "peanuts, contains 1% or less of salt". The Great Value ingredients are listed as "roasted peanuts, sugar, contains 2% or less of molasses, hydrogenated vegetable oils (rapeseed, cottonseed, soybean oil), salt", but also has "ALLERGY WARNING: CONTAINS PEANUTS, MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF MILK, EGGS, ANCHOVIES, WHEAT AND SOY". The only thing that surprises me is "anchovies"???? Both jars of peanut butter were the "creamy" type.

But to continue . . . when my wife saw me opening 2 jars of peanut butter, and putting the dough hook in the mixer, she asked, "Are you fixin' to make a mess?" and I replied, "Quite possibly". As it turned out, no mess at all.

First I mixed the Smuckers pure peanut better that had oil on top when I started. Even when I turned it up to the 7th speed, no mess. When it was thoroughly mixed, I washed the dough hook, then did the same mixing to the Great Value peanut butter. Then came the taste tests; my wife and her sister participated.

And the conclusions; the pure peanut butter was slightly thinner in texture than the other, and all 3 testers agreed that the pure peanut butter tasted better. So I reckon we'll only buy the pure peanut butter in the future and mix it when needed.

And we thank sixdogs for starting this thread with good information.

Well there we have it folks, A scientific test with results!:)

You could make one with a piece of stiff wire.

Harry K

Thought about that, then found one in the local thrift store (the only store in town) for two bits. Now I just need to be able to find it when this jar runs out. :)

So pure peanut butter is Bird Approved.:laughing::laughing: Bird needs to get a trade marked symbol that can be stamped on Bird Approved products. :D:D:D

A bird with a  driving a tractor would work.:laughing::laughing:

Later,

Speaking of bird and peanuts, I have an African grey that loves em. He'll take it hull and all and can opener the top, dig the nut out, slip in his beak and work that thing for 10minutes, all the while still holding the half empty hull in one foot and clung to the freed perch with the other.

Now back to our regularly scheduled food talk ;)

You would think I'd have known all there is to know about peanuts, since I've been a peanut addict most of my life. Even have a 10 year old Chihuahua that is also a peanut addict. Both of us like just about any kind of peanuts and I vary in what I buy of Planter's; dry roasted, Virginia, redskins, etc. The Chihuahua likes them all, too, but if we're having redskins, she will take the peanut in her mouth, then spit out the red skin. I have no idea how she can separate the peanut from the skin in her mouth, but she'll do it without fail. She will not eat the red skin.

And of course my comment above about a "highly scientific experiment" was tongue in cheek if anyone didn't realize it.

Those redskins stick to the roof of my mouth. I don't blame your chihuahua for spitting them out.

Now that you're on a roll, here are some other good things to do with real peanut butter:

*You can give some to a dog and not worry about the sugar content of the jars of that other stuff bothering their teeth
*The wife can make some of the best peanut butter cookies you have ever had.
*Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches again taste like they used to.

There's even a recent discovery about using the smell of peanut butter to determine if one has early onset dementia. By the way, you can get big cans of dry roasted peanuts at Sam's Club for a decent price.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches again taste like they used to.

My wife likes to put peanut butter on one slice of bread the jelly on the other slice, then put then together for a sandwich. I, on the other hand, like to thoroughly mix the peanut butter and jelly first, then spread on the bread or crackers.

By the way, you can get big cans of dry roasted peanuts at Sam's Club for a decent price.

That's where I buy my peanuts . . . except, when I want redskins. Sam's Club has never had them, at least around here. So I have to settle for the smaller cans from Walmart. Right now the Chihuahua (Dee) and I are working on one of those big cans of Extra Large Virginia Peanuts. The last big can was the Dry Roasted, and the next can will probably be Dry Roasted again.

Peanut butter and crackers, now you're talking. I just wish I could find crackers like they used to be, 4 squares in one cracker, the perfect size for sandwiches. I'm old enough to remember peanut butter with oil on the top and the bag of Oleo with the color packet inside. I also remember license sticker on the windshield instead of license plate. Great tip on the dough hook stirrer, I just use a table knife, but been a while since I've bought the unpasturized peanut butter, I'll try it again, just so I can break out the power tools.

I just dug into my jar of Wally World "natural" "non-stir" PB. Been sitting at least a month and only a little bit of oil had sepearated, not enough to bother stirring it.

Just four ingredients: Peanuts, sugar, palm oil, salt

I had an idea of taking an electric hand mixer beater and cutting most of the tines off for mixing my peanut butter. But someone in here mention dough hooks for electric hand mixers and I didn't know they existed. Problem solved!

About 10 years ago I was on a week long rafting trip down the Grand Canyon. The first morning along with breakfast they had toasted English muffins and I asked for some peanut butter. I opened it up and probably said ewww. The guide said it's natural and just needed stirring. Ever since then I switched to the natural types. The guide was right, it was a better peanut butter.
