But the problem is that I replaced the old leaking o-ring on the old elbow and it leaked. Now I bought a new elbow (pretty cheap @ $11.41) and I would like it not to leak. My concern is valid.

Not sure what your problem is, but replacing a fitting takes less time than typing out any responses here. Obviously the oring needs to be away from the threads on the fitting. Maybe you are trying to put a #8ORB fitting in a #8 female pipe port? I致e seen this mistake more than once. A close up pic would tell the story.
