How to wheel and deal!

/ How to wheel and deal! #11
Hello,

When purchasing my DK40se HST, I contacted the dealer I wanted to do business with first. I expressed my desire to buy a tractor, a bunch of attachments, and a zero turn mower, but I'd be starting with the tractor first as money was available. He gave me a decent price, but I shopped around and got a better quote from another dealer. I showed my guy the price and he matched it. Since then, I plan on giving him more opportunity to sell me the rest of the equipment I need and will do business with him if possible.

My dealer is about 130 miles from my property and there are other Kioti/Bobcat vendors closer to me. That said, all of those closer bubbas are very new to the business and don't have any established record of service with anyone here.

I find straight honest dialog helpful. Simply put, "hey, here is the price I got on this tractor from these dealers. I'd like to give you my business. Can you match the price?". All of this was done over the phone and via e-mail. I feel confident in my dealer as he's well established and members here have recommended him to me. In fact, I purchased the tractor back in August 2011 and I won't actually take possession of it until this coming July when we move back home. I wouldn't attempt this type of transaction with a new dealer, only a well established and reputable one.

Good luck!
Mike

Thanks for the comments. Indyian brought up a talking point about used versus new implements. I am initially going to be needing a tiller and bushhog and am prepared to buy new. I just assume that most used tillers and bushogs would all ready have had the snot beat out of him.

I agree with buying a new tiller and brush hog. They do get the snot beat out of them...

If the DK55 had HST that would be my next tractor ;-)

I guess it depends on how much you are going to use them too. I'm looking for a brush hog right now and if I put more than 20 hrs a year on it, I'll be surprised. So probably an old ugly half worn out HD one is a better idea than a new light duty one. But it would be a time/potential headache saver just to go get a new half decent one.
I did find a 1100lb box blade for 1/3 of new price, and its atleast half worn out but I doubt I'll finish it off in my lifetime with my tractor... It took a while to find but a new or lightly used one wasn't going to be approved.

Dealers can play hard ball all day long but they lose in the long run.

I generally dislike dealers, so if they play hard ball with me, I can and will drive them crazy because I'm patient and extremely persistent.

As for negotiating with dealers, I have a few strategies which have proven to be effective, but I'd rather not post them for the dealers to read. However, I will say that regardless of what they would have you believe, the dealer is not your friend, and whoever has more information usually has the advantage.

For your comparison: just bought both new
Woods 74 tiller - 2300
Woods bbx60 bush hog - 1400

If you find a good answer to the question, please let us know. This is the biggest reason I loathe making large purchases, the bottom line. Does one really exist?

I've just gone through the same exercise. I got quotes from three dealers on different brands, and the Kioti dealer was by far the best. I had already visisted the dealership a couple of times, and was impressed by the dealer's openness. I wound up buying the tractor, loader, quick hitch, rotary cutter, pallet forks, and tiller from him as a package deal, but he priced each piece separately. I was satisified with the price, and signed.

Later on he told me that he gives his lowest price up front, doesn't negotiate off of it much, but doesn't try to make a killing off each deal either. I also found out he mispriced the tractor, gave me a gear price rather than HST, but honored his quote to me. He also gives free delivery, and is holding the tractor and all for me for a year until we get our new house built since we have nowhere to store it or use it until then.

One thing I found in all my research is that I could not find Kioti list prices. The other dealers did give me discounted prices, but there was so much difference that I didn't give them any more consideration.

I wish you the same good luck in your deal.

Thanks Green, I am headed to the dealer tomorrow. They just got in anther shipment of DKs. Just curious why you bought this year as opposed to waiting until you house was finished and then buy a tractor. Did it have anything to do with the Tier 4 restrictions coming next year?

I managed to avoid both the 4/1 price increase and the major sticker shock coming next year with the Tier IV final new electronic engines. I actually started out looking simply to find out which tractors fit me and those that didn't, but the price I got was too good to pass up.
