I am wondering what the best approach is in negotiating with my dealer. Your opinions please.

I initially assumed I would barter the price on the tractor and FEL and once that was established I would then see what kinds of things I could weasel out of the dealer.

The other day I was reading another post and someone mentioned trying to get a package deal. That member suggested telling the dealer everything you are looking for ie. tractor, FEL, implements, loaded tires, bucket hook, etc. Then have the dealer work up an offer and go from there.

I believe I like the latter method better. It seems less slimy. I am not a great negotiator and I just want the dealers honest price. I think the package deal approach would give the dealer more opportunity to work with you.

What do you all think?:confused3:

NEVER buying new is the first step in becoming a "wheeler-dealer". I just purchased a Kioti DK55 w/ front end loader and bush hog for $12,500 with only 231 hours on it. Let some other idiot drive it off the lot for a $20,000 loss; in a couple of years that's how it boils down. Just my two cents worth.

what kind of barter room is there on used tractors? I found a BX with a loader, mmm, and hyd snow blade I want and think I can talk him down some but IDK.....

The simplest way to buy anything that does not have a "set" price is to use the only thing you have complete control over: how much do you want to pay. End of story. We get too caught up about "what we should pay" or "what someone else paid" and we lose ourselves. We are way too concerned about "what the dealer is making on me" instead of "what the dealer makes is of no concern" Because we want something we have to pay for, the dealer becomes the enemy when we feel we have to wheel and deal? "Wheeling and dealing" becomes absolutely unnecessary when we simply answer the basic question above. If a tractor lists for $22000, how much do you want to pay to be able to actually own the tractor? What becomes more important: owning the tractor or buying the tractor? In the 25 years I've owned my JD, I would not hesitate to ponder that I have saved 6 times its purchase price in the work it has done for me. Saving a thousand or two at its purchase in the scheme of things is meaningless. You cannot control the sale but you can certainly control the purchase. Regard those things that are most important to you and as a result, everyone else's criteria becomes moot.

Sounds like dealer-speak. Model, condition and hours at the lowest price- that is the best way to buy. Money is money; save as much a possible and don't let emotions cloud your decision. It is currently a buyer's market- especially the used market. :thumbsup:
