Winches How to winch 4300?

...........Notice that I said STRAP, as in nylon that will stretch, not CHAIN. ...............

I use chain because it does NOT stretch, and does not build up energy that will be released quickly if something breaks and that strap acts like a powerful slingshot.

If nothing breaks, then all is fine.

Some use the stretch so they can jerk at the stuck equipment or whatever they are pulling. Jerking or getting a run at it is not a sensible thing to do, and causes things to over stress and break.

I was able to get the tractor out Saturday. It wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be; conversely getting my truck out was much harder than I expected.

I ended up using a 6x6 timber under the bucket to raise the front end and fill in the front ruts with some spare wheels. I then attached chains to the eyes on the bottom of the loader bracket; maybe that is the weight rack. The bucket was then lowered with it tilted up sled-like. Pulling with my winch about six feet got the front end onto firmer ground. I was worried about pulling too much with the HST, so I then drove the tractor out using the bucket to pull me along until the tires found enough traction.

I think it looked a whole lot more stuck then it was. The loader can really help out as long as there is something for it to push against. Without it I would have had to winch much further than I did.

Good news JP;)

In the future, put the gearshift lever in neutral, that will disconnect the drivetrain from the tranny.

The range shift shaft is broken. I received the parts to repair on Monday, so hopefully I'll be able to get range selection working.

The range shift shaft is broken.

That's a feature of rental tractors....sometimes it is intentionally set up
that way. And the shift shaft is a bit fragile.

Which rental yard did you buy from? Maybe the same one I work with.

The "rental" kit only locks out C range, A, B and neutral are still available.

JP, Look at THIS long thread on the fix for the shifter...

There is a remnant of a riveted strap across the 'C' range throw of the shifter. I suspect that was quickly bypassed by renters. I'd hoped the linkage had just been removed to thwart hot rod renters and that the bellcrank and shaft were still intact. Alas, upon inspection the shaft was broken and the bellcrank missing.

I read the shift repair thread over a couple of times before decided to purchase. I think the broken range shift and maybe a high dealer repair cost was reflected in the purchase price. I got the tractor, 420 loader, JD-something tiller, and Land Pride box for $3900. I carefully read and re-read dfkrug's rebuild thread until I was confident I could fix anything that might pop up.

I'm missing everything from the actual shift lever forward, so I bought all the external parts from JD. I bought a chrome plated, 5/8" solid shaft from McMaster-Carr along with a couple different types of shaft seals. Hopefully I'll be able to tackle it this weekend and I'll start a new thread with my results. If it works out as I hope, this should be cheap, easy fix.

I think it was in "B" range when I bought it because it was hella slow for loader work. I was able to drill and tap the remaining shaft enough to turn it into 'C' range. If I hadn't gotten stuck, I could have knocked out my project in no time.

Funny, I read your thread a least a dozen times and I never noticed the "A Tool Shed" stickers. That's where I got mine.

You keep saying "720" loader-It must be a 420...

yeah, I kept typing 720 into search fields too. Some weird neural connection going on there or maybe its just that the 7 is just above the 4 on the keypad... corrected now.

Our favorite rental yard has used several ways of locking out high speed
capability on different tractors over the years. On my first Kubotas, they
just whacked off the range shift lever. On the JD955s, they welded a
plate over the slot that the shifter moved it. My 4300 was in many pieces
and no range lockout was apparent. I did have the broken shaft, as we
know.

I did two things to improve the range shifter mechanism. I DID use the
stock shaft, but I replaced the detent spring with a softer one inside the
shift fork. I also installed an O-ring between my new bellcrank and the
gearcase. It is quite snug and should exclude water from getting in there.
My shifter shifts very easily, but not too easily...I was concerned about that.

As for the labels, I have removed most of them, but here is one I will not:
