Well, it was going on well before now. I remember several home burglaries on our block back in the 60's. Drug crazed teens!!!

Anyhow, there's double the population since then, so there's double the criminals, even though percentage wise, its about the same crime rate today as it was in the 1960s.

Unfortunately, even though the percentage of crime is the same, with that doubling of the population and the doubling of the criminals, you're twice as likely to be near a criminal as you were in the 60's. But you still have the same chance of being a victim. :confused2:

We live at the end of a one mile gravel road with the closest neighbor right at 1/4 mile away; the next two are at 1/2 mile away. If the thieves come down our road and driveway, there's not one thing that will stop them from getting into anything they want within any reasonable time frame. And they can make all the noise they want.

Cameras don't really deter, they just record for after the fact. Although that has some uses and I may be looking to add some in the near future. We do have dogs, four in fact. One is an adult and a great human warning signal but a lousy animal/varmint guard dog. Hopefully, the other three puppies will grow into great guard dogs, both human and varmint.

So for me, the real solution is deterrence. Deterrence in the form of me always being openly armed (S&W 329PD .44 Mag) and carrying long arms in either my tractor or RTV. I haven't added a gun rack to my ZD yet, but I'm thinking about it.

Word got out pretty quick around here, both from feedback from our neighbors but also from the local sheriff, whom I had a pretty long conversation a while back, and from the state game warden for our county.

Whenever I run the road (i.e. drag my BB down the gravel road) I'm visibly armed with this on my tractor:

Newbury's response is every bit as relevant as yours. Cameras record events, not deter them. Alarms in rural areas are a waste. You offer no answer to the still clear question: How to prevent theft?

Location helps. We live at the end of a small county road. Access is only thru my gate, which I normally keep shut. (can't go around the gate, drops into ravines/timber, unless you enter with a bulldozer). Drive way is further covered with multiple motion/magnetic alarm sensors. Waiting at the back end is me with a Mossberg 500 or AR-15. There have been no successful thefts here in the 30+ years I've owned it.

I think that many land owners is not on farm every day, maybe some is not on land for months, cant transport every time all equipment to and from land. How you protect farm from theft??? Alarm, hd hidden cameras, sensors, equipment hidden behind double wall, underground? Is it possible to install some alarm which will trigger my cell phone and I can speak to some speaker on proprietary and scare theft?

I purchased a five year option contract that functions as an insurance product on my tractor and attachments.

USAA covers the rest.

I have analog and IP cameras on DVR's. I prefer the IP cameras for the quality of picture, and the fact I can bring each one up direct on my smartphone.

One of the neighbor girls was over one day with her boyfriend. He noticed the cameras and made a comment about them. Course he thought every motion detector was a camera, so he was really impressed. :laughing:

I think there is confusion here over the terms "digital" and "IP." It is not necessary to have an "IP" camera in order for it to be digital with just as high or HIGHER resolution than a typical "IP" (Internet Protocol addressable) camera.

those are cool. But relies on recovery of stollen stuff to work or that people know what they are to reconize them to not steal them in the first place. Cameras are recognized as a way that an owner can see a person and then turn it over to police. A person even though they may see a sticker may not realize what it means and then can sell your tractor to the hunter two towns over for a fair to slightly fair price and may not be known for 10 years or so till he may have to buy some part that they need the serial number or something for and it gets put in the computer and comes up stolen.

Many things are sold that are stolen to normal people and live thier lives out on that persons place and no one is the wiser even the person who just bought it for what he thought was a "you suck" price.
