Hi all
I just got done installing a cab on my Ransomes front deck mower.
Now, I really notice a howling noise from the hydro, espceially when its pulling, like uphill, or just taking off.
The hydro is an Eaton M-11 and it runs off the side of the main shaft via a belt drive.
First off a couple of observations:
1- with the addition of the cab, I'm sure it sounds worse with all of that going on underneath me and the cab holding the sound in.
2- the cab adds a lot of weight, probably 400-500#, so I'm sure it is working harder now to pull everything.
I mowed for about an hour and then checked it out. The hydro itself was not hot to the touch, so I don't believe there are any serious issues there.
My thought is this.
There is an idler pulley on the belt and it only has a spring to keep tension.
When it is running at idle, the idler seems to bounce the spring a lot, and I suspect it bounces more at higher RPM and under load, both hydro and main shaft running the mower deck.
I wonder if it would be a good idea to put something solid, maybe threaded rod w/ heim ends, to hold the idler at a constant tension.
I can't see that being harmful, the hydro on my tractor is hooked right to the back of the engine.
Are there other things I should check for the cause of the howling? Would it be harmful to tension the belt solid?
Thanks!
