How's The Weather?

Well - things have changed. It got serious. I now have eight inches and it's still snowing. Made a trip out to the mail box in the Power Wagon. The PW didn't even notice the snow. This snow is like bakers flour. VERY small, fine flakes.

Looks like I'll be plowing when this snow quits. The good news - this snow means the neighbors cows will be pulled into the feed lots. I can now leave the two driveway gates open.

Well, send some of it this way. We had a couple inches last week but it's mostly gone now. Storm that dumped snow in the midwest a few days ago is just mid 30s and rain here.

Here in SE Michigan the temp is falling like a rock. I suspect it will be snowing shortly. Gone is the balmy weather. On go the long undies.

I learned to love Oregon winter weather. It was the time to be really active. Sadly, not so active any more, but I still love it and love to be outside in it. You just have to dress for the weather.

Winter togs are already serving well. From the bottom up:

Boot socks. My mother always asked me what I wanted for Christmas, and I always told her socks. She's been gone 5 years, but I still have a drawer of thick, warm, boot socks. Thanks, Mom.
Boots. I have a 25 year old pair of Danners and a pair of custom made Clemons Boots. If one pair gets wet, I can let it dry and wear the other.

Long johns. I have several pair, thanks to Susan. She hit a $5 sale at Bi-Mart.
Heavy pants. My favorites right now are Carhartt bib overalls, AKA "Farmer Johns." No bare back when I bend over. I also have several other pair of work pants, and two pair of cords just showed up.
Heavy T-shirts. Heavy sweatshirts. Hoodie sweatshirts. Layer upon layer, depending on condition. Top layer is a hooded Carhartt work jacket, treated with silicone waterproofing spray. If it's really wet, I have a Carhartt nylon rain coat, also waterproofed. It breathes. I spent years working in rubber rain gear, and got wetter inside from sweat than if I had just left it off.

Gloves. Lots of gloves, because they get wet. Everything from thin cotton knit to heavy leather fleece or thinsulate lined. Traction finger work gloves. Lots of different kinds.

Everyone needs a hat. My favorite is a Filson duck hunter's bill cap with ear flaps and a quilted liner. If it's cold I can flip the sweatshirt and work coat hood over my head. If it's really, really cold, I have a thinsulate stocking cap that I wear on top of the Filson, and still add hoods. If it's that cold, I probably add another layer on my legs too.

Understand this is PNW winter gear. This is how to dress comfortably on days when it is windy and raining ice water all day long. The key is staying dry, avoiding wet clothing against your skin, and lots of layers you can put on or take off. A single heavy coat is only good if you sit in one spot. If you are active outdoors, layers are the way to go.

It's nice to live in a mild climate. I don't want to dis the real killer weather. I was stuck in Kearney, NE once at 40 degrees below zero and a 40 mph wind straight out of the north pole. A young woman tried to walk 6 blocks to buy milk for her baby, and didn't make it.

It seems to be slowing down somewhat. @11:30 AM - 10.0 inches. The snow has turned wet and heavy. I won't be plowing this stuff until it turns cold. The single track out the driveway will have to do.

I have all that cold wx gear also Larry. However - if it's THAT cold - hot cup of "laced" chocolate and gaze out the window. My days of romping in the -10F or colder WX are long gone.

Can you believe - when I was young and in my prime - we would be out snowmobiling in -10F, -20F and colder WX. Alaskans know how to have fun outdoors.

The forecast for Mt. Bachelor is impressive. 2-3 feet of new snow and winds gusting to 70 mph. I think that qualifies as a blizzard.

Way back when, He coldest I snow machined in was minus 45 (f) and I got severe frostbite on my face for that folly. Fingers too.

Have you seen the tornado news? That's what happens when a cold front hits the Gulf teapot. Wow. This is not a good time of year to be blown out of your home.

November has been cold. We’ve had several mountain snows and a few inches in the plains. Nights are fluctuating between 5 above and 30 degrees, days in the 40-60s. Not do much moisture in November as there was in October. I’m hoping that we get decent snow this winter.

One sci-fi short story that I have become to appreciate, is this one by Ray Bradbury. part of "illustrated man," about people that absolutely needed sunlight in the same way we need water.

If you come to the PNW from someplace else, it will be a bit of a shock to you that, yes, indeed it can rain for a full month, every day. And this rain is cold, 33 to 42 degrees, and blows in all directions, and goes right to your bones till you get a bit crazy with hypothermia, no matter what you are wearing. Straight out, Snow is easier, as its dry. :)

I spent a couple years in the PNW in the mid 70s. The uninterrupted overcast from mid-Oct. thru April really got to me the first year, though by the 2nd I'd adapted to it somewhat. ISTR the "rain" being kind of "more than mist but not quite drizzle"...you could go out in it and not get too wet.
The culture differences were more of a challenge than the weather though, never really felt like I fit in.

They can be strange up there. Lack of sunshine in some areas, I guess.
