That is exactly what I need done to mine. Right now the wheel wobbles and is at a funky angle and won't roll properly in reverse.

I picked up a 4' howse last year for $125 from the brother of a friend of mine. The deck has a couple of cuts from the blade hitting it but it cuts well. I don't know what part of PA you are from but on route 19 in Waterford a guy has a 4' er for $500 or $600 I think and it is real nice shape. I think $800 is way out of line for that mower. I would offer him $600 and see what he says.

time to make one. I did so with 3/8" flat stock, a chop saw, and a torch. used a framing angle to match some angles and measurements and a piece of soapstone to mark it all.

new long bolt and pal nuts for the axle.. some grease and paint and she was back in action. probably used 5 rods, and a minute of oxy-acet.

bet it didn't take me 15 minutes from 'darn that's not repairable' to 'there's the new one'

I agree with others price around here for one is around$695 I just sold my old howse 10ft shredder in great working condition for $1400 and it never let me down,just bought a new 8ft.(fits on trailer better).

I rebuild a Howse mower (6') a while back, and the tailwheel bearings were gone. I don't mean worn out, I mean missing. I grabbed a piece of aluminum pipe that had the same O.D. as the tailwheels bearing housings I.D. and close enough to the diameter of the shaft that it wouldn't wobble too much. I took a 3 pound sledge and drove it in, installed the tail wheel and sold it. Two years later I bought it back and it is working fine. Guess the tailwheel doesn't need bearings, as bushings will work.

I actually cut a couple of extra pieces from the same pipe and wired them to the deck of the bush hog. They were still there when I got it back also.

I've done exactly the same with off the shelf bronze bushings from tsc, and nylon bushings from lowes / **** despot on 2 clapped out mowers i have. neither have seemed to notice yet..

My Jbar has angle welded to the verticle pieces for stability. It is cut maybe 2"s shorter than the leg and stood there and each arm of the angle is welded to the flat stock. Im sure this it to keep it from bending easily.

if this one bends , and i doubt it will, as I don't abuse my toys, I'll weld some angle to each side..

don't forsee needing it. none of my other tailwheel forks has ever bent.. i don't use the back of my mower like a bulldozer like the previous owner of this one must have..

We have had a Howse for years, at least 25. It is hooked to a 706 IH and I believe is an 8 footer. It has chewed through everything from grass to a steel 55 gal. drum full of old metal and is still going. It will pulverise anything the tractor can knock over.

55 gal drums are not recommended brush hog fodder!!:confused2:
