HS students suspended for disarming gunman

not sure about all of you, but I never saw a suspension as very punishing when I was in school.

There are times when a student refuses to comply with a school official. As an example, sudent is sent out of my class due to a disruptive behavior. He/she goes to office but then walks out of principals office or refuses to serve a detention, or disrupts in detention room. Another example, student refuses to attend class and decides to walk the halls and distract others who are in class and then ignores the administrators. What would you suggest?

I agree that in many ways out of school suspension is not perfect. For students (and parents) who value education the possibility of being suspended is part of why a student decides to comply at times.

I would say that the types of students that you describe in the first paragraph are ones that value education. I actually did value education and still do, but just like work now, I wouldn't complain about a few days off once in a while as I get few. A suspension itself would not bother me, it would more have been my parents reaction to the suspension that would have been more punishing. I did get my share of detentions earlier on in school and let me tell you... they were terrible. I was in sports so they were quite inconvenient, and yes I did show up to them and behaved in them- not only because not doing so would have gotten me more, but also because I have at least enough honor to take my punishment without complaint.

This is beside the point though. Not knowing enough details to judge whether or not he even deserved punishment, I would say that if he was in the right, and his parents were on his side, then it's just a couple days away from school- not very punishing IMHO. If the article is misleading and he was in the wrong, it still is not very punishing IMHO.

I was not trying to imply anything concerning this suspension. I know none of the details. I was just trying to make the point that in order to maintain order, certain level of student compliance is needed and at times suspension serves a purpose.

I see no mention of that in the report. "The kid who wrestled the gun away can go back to school Monday"

Yep, your are right. I dont' see that now so it either got removed or I misread something.

According to the referral, he was suspended for being part of an "incident" where a weapon was present and given an "emergency suspension."

It looks like a "cooling off" period. This way they can find out what happened and make sure there is no retaliation.

Yep, that is the standign policy in that school and they followed it. Any fight, all involved are "emergency suspended" pending investigation. How long that will take, or took is not in the article.

Lot of "knee jerk" reactions. I did the same until I thought about it a little. YOu can't have kids involved in such an incident proceed to class as if nothing happened pending investigation.

There is also nothing in the report about the kid with gun NOT being suspended. I've seen a couple claims to the effect he wasn't.

Maybe the "disarmer" was a bully that the "armed" kid finally stood up to.

 And yes, I'm just pulling that outta my nether-regions. The poster that mentioned the three sides to every story is right (imo). It will be interesting to see exactly what went down.

I agree. Such situations rarely turn out as clear cut as the first appear. Suspend everyone and let the investigation sort it out.

All those who think the policy is stupid should put pen to paper an try writing policy that covers all such situations.
