HST or gear-drive?

Looks like you’re using a skid steer. Entirely different conversation. I presume you’ve used a tractor mounted front loader before and you know the drastic difference in visibility of the work area. I suspect that your skill in juggling rocks and placing dirt is more related to the machine and not the transmission

It didn’t work as well or fast but I did used to do the same job with a front loader. 50 years ago or probably more like 70 years ago they did used to make gear trans loaders. Want to guess why they’re obsolete?

I have a ford 2610 8x2 gear drive with loader. Use it a ton. You geat really good with the clutch

gear heads: in today's machines, unlike old days, hyd wet pack technology is far superior to the single dry plate as in the past & in current machines with shuttle shift that require clutching between directional changes.

wet pack systems i've read far outlast the ol' tried & true single pressure dry plate clutch. another example of how today's consumer has so many more options vs yesteryear...

How many gear tractor guys would spread dirt right against a sidewalk? I do this all the time and I’ve never had to buy a sidewalk. Can you run it smooth enough to flip rocks in the bucket without scooping a bunch of dirt with it?
Many years ago we had a 4 speed stick forklift at the airport. It caused lots of damage to aircraft. Especially since the tread was worn off the clutch pedal and it was just slick metal. It was a nightmare on rainy nights.

I don't plow fields or mow large acreage. I'll take my HST. (y)

If you don't have enough control on a tractor with gear transmission that you can't dump a load of dirt without destroying a sidewalk, wall, fence, whatever, then for the safety of anyone around you, it's just better you stay off of anything with a clutch. That's an operator issue, not a transmission issue.

HST for my loader work which is 99% of my needs.

I’m not just dumping the dirt I’m grading beside it with very minimal hand raking required. And I’d like to see you try as accurately with a gear tractor and be anything close to as fast. You’re going to have to go down into creeper gear to have enough control to do it and probably take 5x as long. I don’t think you realize how much faster a HST machine is for loader work. You hype on loosing power which isn’t wrong but small tractors in America aren’t putting food on the table. Even 80-100 hp tractors largely aren’t putting food on the table.

Yea, I’ve ran straight shift forklifts. I wouldn’t give 2 nickels for one especially since better forklifts are fairly cheap.

Handling a clutch is second nature for anyone used to it. You would be surprised how much work someone who can actually handle a clutch will do. It's certainly not as slow as you think it is. Again, falls mostly on the operator.

Loader work is not the main task of a tractor and gears are there to be used but people are lazy but refuse to use those gears for some reason.

Not sure why you keep bringing a skidsteer to a discussion about tractors but go figure. A tractor won't do the job of a skidsteers just as as skidsteer won't do the job of a tractor. Entirely different machines, for different purposes.

Also, geared transmissions is not obsolete as you claim to be, the reason is simple, the HST just can't replace those transmissions, not even close to. What good is a tractor that can't do what it was designed for? Pulling stuff, amongst several other jobs that the HST just can't handle, regardless what myths get spread all over.

I didn’t say that gear transmissions are obsolete although the basic un synchronized dry clutch gear transmissions largely are obsolete. I said that 50 years ago and beyond that they made loaders and forklifts with gear transmissions and those are obsolete.
