Finished routine mowing then checked the HST temp using a infra red thermometer. The temp was around 185 degrees. Is that high?

Info:
BX2360 (2011)
About 110 hours
Grass average height - not a hay field
Mowing time was about 1.5 hours
Air temp was around 78
Using SUDT2 in HST
Engine temp never went over half way
60" mid mount mower
Unit did not lug or appear to be working hard
Fan blade is clear and and undamaged
Operated in high range 2WD

I think you'll find that 100 degrees above ambient temperature is about normal, so apparently you weren't much over that. So the short answer to you question "Is that high?" would be, Nope, about normal.

Just the other day I mowed the lawn with my BX1500. My working conditions were exactly like yours, the only difference is that I have a 54 inch deck instead your 60 incher. I also use SUDT2. I checked the trany temp at several different locations with the infrared gun and the readings were between 180 and 190.

I'm glad you posted this question because I was wondering if my trans temp was normal, I guess it is.

Incidentally, this topic comes up from time to time. In fact, I was one of those who wondered if mine was getting too hot some years ago, so you sure aren't alone. I don't know that you'd really get a lot more information, but if you wish, you could read some of these old threads.

Rear axle temp
hydro oil temp
hyd. operating temperature

And I'm sure there are others if you search for them.

On compressors, we run a thermostat that keeps our oil between 190F and 210F to burn off condensate. Shutdown is 240F, designed for an ambient of 125F. I would say that is normal operating temp and would not be concerned at all. Philip.

I checked Sauer-Danfoss' website. They are one of the world's largest makers of hydraulic components. They have a very detailed section on fluid for hydraulic components including which fluid for which temp and how each component (piston pump, valve, gear pump, steering control) works with different fluids. Looking at the chart for the fluid that covers UDT, 95 degrees C is the upper continuous limit although a hydro can go to 115C intermittently.

I have the same tractor .. dropped a temp probe down the filler hole and it maxed out at 212. Changed to Amsoil after 50 hrs and got 203 (but on a slightly colder day). Use mine to mow in 4wd low range. So I guess that's what they run at.
