Saw a 790 for a great price. Been looking for a tractor but wanted a hydro. What are the pros/cons of a hydro vs. a std. trans.?

Depends what you're doing. If you do a lot of stop and go or loader work you should think about the hydro. The stick gets a little better mileage but these guys use so little it isn't a big point. What kind of land and what will you be doing?

Some guys like the stick, though.

Like I tell eveyone, drive it before you buy it!

Depends on your primary use... Mine is mowing the yard, so HST for me was a priority. If you'll be doing more bush hog work, then the gear would be nice to maintain a constant speed without having to press the go pedal (unless you get cruise control to go with it). FEL use is easier with HST, but HST uses a little more HP, also. Basically, if you'll be going backward and forward all the time, HST would be easier. But if most of your stuff is field work primarily in one direction, go with gear..

I had a 790 for 6 years or so. Great machines!
Once you get used to the non-synchro transmission and the 2-stage clutch, they can do just about anything...mowing, hogging, loader work, chipping. So, if your tasks include those, it'll be a good choice.
I'd write more about the 790, but there are a multitude of threads on TBN discussing these fine little machines...their strengths as well as their limitations, so do a search.

However, I wanted a reverser transmission and one came along at the right price.

You are on the right track thinking hydro, I wouldn't be swayed by the 790. Looking at tractors in this size range I notice most are moving to hydro transmission. They are easier to operate and recognize this size machine is not a field tractor.

Do a search on this site. There have been volumes written here on the pro's and con's, which is better ect. Volumes... This has to one of the, if not the, most discussed subject. JD hydro, Kubota gear, NH hydro, this pedal vs that pedal... JD hydro vs gear, Kubota, all of them. Then there is which kind of gear? Collar shift, shuttle?

If you have a week or so to read, you might cover half of what has been written since 2000 :D That does not count the previous 4 years or so of this site in it's previous format..

I'm not gonna knock the 790. It is a great machine and I loved mine. That being said, there is no way in he** I would go back to shifting. For small acreage with tight spaces there is no other way to go than hst.

I have a 790 and love it, its a great tractor and is damm near bullet proof.. The standard shift is a pain if you use it for FEL work, other than that I would highly remommend the 790.

To go forward:

On my dad's Mahindra 4110's 12x12, you have to be at (or come to) a complete stop, push in the clutch, move the F/R lever to Forward, then let the clutch out while giving it a little throttle.

With my HST, I lightly push down with my right toe.

To go backward:

On my dad's, again, come to (or be at) a complete stop, push in the clutch, move the F/R lever to R, then let the clutch out while giving it a little throttle.

With my HST, I lightly push down with my right toe.

Both tractors require the selection of range, so I excluded that from the above. However, even that's easier with my HST. I select from Low, Medium & High while stopped. My dad's requires selection of both Range L-M-H and Gear 1 thru 4.

My tractor also has cruise control, so if my right toe gets tired ;), or if I want to maintain a set speed, I can move the CC to any forward speed I want.

I had a gear tractor for a little more than 4 years. It was a great tractor and I wish that I still had it.

But, neither my wife or my youngest son would use it very much. They worried about "jumping" into something while working in close quarters - cleaning the barn and corrals or mowing close to the fence or buildings, etc.

So, it was a good excuse for me to buy something with more power and heft! (And I did it just to help them out...!!)

If you don't mind shifting (I grew up on gear tractors) the 790 (3005) is a great workhorse and you won't have to worry about "throwing a code" on the computer - at all!
