Huge Government recall for Ram, Jeep

Maybe Chevy should buy back all of their pick ups from the 70's to late 80's those gas tanks were mounted on the outside of the frame. Mounted between the bed fender and frame. If you had a dump or flat bed on the back they were exposed. If you ever got t-boned the results would not be good. The Jeep Grand Cherokee passed all govt crash tests. So maybe the govt should buy them back.

Chevy truck owners who bought their trucks new got a $1000 certificate towards a new Chevy truck if I remember correctly. I still have my one owner '73 K20 pickup, still runs fine.

glad to see it doesn't include my 03 3500 Cummins version. still getting great mileage and don't want a different truck.

wonder what my nephew will do with his 2012 2500 cummins with G56 that is a replacement for the same version that had the auto- matic that Chrysler bought back because of all the troubles with its transmission. 3rd truck??
I think he might take the money and buy a pre common rail 3500:laughing:

Does it included every 2012 2500 4x4 or did it have to be recalled once before for the tie rod issues. I have a 12 2500 4x4 but never had a recall and can't find (ran the vin) where there is a recall for it? Truck seems fine and I have no issues so I am wondering if I am in the buy out mess or not? Anyone know if the dealers know anything yet?

Chevy actually did..sort of..In the late 80's after the class action lawsuit I was awarded a voucher of $2000.00 toward the purchase of a new GM vehicle of my choice..Of course being a broke construction worker with three young children my voucher went unused.. I still have the truck though..73 cheyenne shortwide 4x4 with factory air,and I'm the second owner. My buddy ordered it from the factory and had to wait 8 month's..

I could be wrong but I kind of remember 2 k on the voucher.

Not so much..Dateline tried and tried and tried to get one to blow up---They wouldn't..Ended up using a mini missle for dramatic effect to get their desired result....Resulting in months of mea-culpas and various investigations...

Sadly the individual who died as a result of a T-bone got hit at somewhere around 65-70 MPH. If he'd have been in a beer can, it wouldn't have been an issue.

Sympathies to the victim regardless.

Dodge actually had to do something eventually. This one seems to be for tie-rods, but they have ad an inordinate amount of ball joint and other front end failures that they can't resolve. Must be their vendors..Dodge should check hard into them. My neighbor had a pitman arm snap when he started his 11 2500 HD..Thank God he wasn't in motion when it happened...Truck became instantly immobile.

I`m in the same boat. Worked hard to get my 08 2500 (cummins) 4x4 paid for. I would hate to turn in with 85,000 miles and get 20,000 or so for a very good used pickup. I would like to see Chrysler let the owners fix their own vehicles and pay for the repair. It looks like the fix that Dodge has completed in the past was not up to par for these heavy trucks. I`m waiting now on the airbag recall, not sure how long this will take. Good luck to all you owners.

Ya, I'm waiting for more details on the trucks that have been fixed since mine was (supposedly). I put an 8x12 rack side dump bed on my cab chassis truck. What good is a truck book value buy back to me? Zip.

Fortunately I haven't had any problems with the truck but stories of snapping pitman arms is a bit scary.

Chrysler has already bought back one pickup from me, a 2007 6.7L diesel that was plagued with emissions related problems. I ended up with a 2008 in the deal and still have that pickup. It's been good, but I had front end problems starting at about 40,000 miles. I upgraded most of the front end parts (on my own dime) and haven't had any issues since. I wasn't really looking at getting a new pickup any time soon, but if the buyback price is right I might bite.

One thing is for sure: If you make cars or medicine, you will be faced with lawsuits (eventually), better have a little $ in the bank for the rainy days....

Not every Jeep Grand Cherokee that gets rear ended catches on fire either. Nor Ford Crown Victoria's. But there are some that do. The Crown Vic gas tank is right behind the axle, with a large trunk before it. Any vehicle when hit at high speed can puncture a fuel tank. I have seen tractor trailer trucks blow a front tire and rupture a 150 gallon saddle tank. Though diesel is less flammable than gas. Even all electric vehicles like Tesla catch on fire after hitting metal debris that punctured the battery. They have since reinforced it.

I absolutely hate recalls and even TSB's. There is SO much mis-information, limited information, lack of information, etc out there on the web.

I have an 05 3500 and an 05 1500. Last recall I got was something about the steering thing, which at the time I believe the letter only effected 03-08 models, and even then, not all of them. It seems if I remember correctly, it had to do with the steering stabilizer, and weather it was attached via a stud through the steering bar, or u-bolts. And I think there was another recall letter about something to do with the front suspension.

I have tried several times to find information on recalls and TSB's and get alot of hit and miss information. And when calling a dealer about parts or whatnot, they never bother to tell you if stuff is covered under a recall or TSB, because they want to sell the part instead of fixing it for free. But I havent found a good reliable source for accurate information (that doesnt require a subscription) regarding recalls and TSB's.

I think one of them was involving the steering geometry change dodge made somewhere around 07 or 08. And going from a y-style to a T-style setup (or vice versa I cant remember). I had just replaced ALL the components for the front steering. All the tierods and links and everything that moves all the way from the pitman arm out to the spindles. Then was getting bits of info on other forums while searching that indicated that if you had issues like I had (ball joint popping out and death wobble) that dodge would upgrade everything to the newer t-style for free. Of course this was after the fact and ofcourse the dodge dealer said they never heard of such a thing.

While I dont follow dodge trucks much, this recall for 08+ is kinda surprising. Since everything I have had to do to mine and the researching I have done all indicated that the 08 and newer ones were fixed since it was a new style steering setup.
