Hummingbirds on the move

I haven't seen any around here yet, but heck it's 60+ here today (with 40's tomorrow though), but it won't hurt to get the feeders cleaned up and put out.

We usually have at least on bully on the back porch. We keep one feeder hanging off the back door with a suction cup hanger and one on the gaslight in the far corner of the deck. I'm going to try hand feeding with a red small plastic lid. I don't use colored food for them. Simple sugar water. I would really enjoy hand feeding. I have held the feeder in my hand in the past and had just a few take a little food. We have buttercups in full bloom now is probably the only flowers around.

Yup, the males sometimes pick a feeder and guard it quite vigorously, I overcome this by having 4 feeders and just concentrated sugar water. I boil the water, remove pot from stove, add the white sugar, stir until dissolved, let cool, add to glass pitcher and store in fridge. I change/wash the feeders every 3/4 days to keep it fresh but most of the time mid to end of season the hummers clean up a feeder pretty quick.

I'd be willing to bet you have some in the area. Buttercups are in full bloom here. Suppose to be sign of an early spring. With that said, we've had three snow dustings here in the last week. Crazy weather.

I've had at least one of my little girls winter over. There were 2 most of the winter. I didn't see them for a week or 2 and though they had gone south.

Years ago I was going to fill up the feeder, as I was taking it down the little guy got right in my face, about 5 or 6 inches and really told me off for messing with his feeder. Even with widely separated feeders one little guy will try to own them all.
