Hunkered down for Sandy?

We got wind and rain and some trees dropped in the private hunting club near by, but we have power, never lost it, and I feel very lucky.

This is a huge storm. Thankfully, we were not in the bullseye and the storm skirted us but we have been getting strong winds for a couple of days now. We were supposed to have quite a bit of rain starting Friday evening but the rain only hit late yesterday afternoon. The rain was odd in that in was literally all around us but not on us. Very strange. The temps are dropping and we will likely have to fire up the wood stove today. I went out just before sun set last night and brought a load of firewood to the house. Right after I finished that chore the rain started. We got a fair amount of rain last night but not bad.

The wind has been pretty constant all weekend with some higher gusts. Getting in the wood last night was brutal because of the wind. This morning the wind finally seems to be slowing down. Sure am glad we had some trees that endangered the house taken down over the summer. The power has been ok but at about 5:00pm yesterday it flickered pretty bad twice. The power goes past a house with a large forked tree overhanging the line. We had some power wind gusts a few months ago and lost power. Trees at this house lost their tops which took out the power line. I was hoping that forked tree had fallen but alas it is still there. It is only a matter of time before wind, snow or ice take down the forked trunk leaning over the line. :( I was hoping that the guy who owns the house would cut the forked tree down when the lines were taken out but he did not.

I read this morning that 7.6 million people were without power. I feel for them. What a mess.

Speaking of babies being born. The radio show I listen too has been calling family member living in the NE. One of the family members was giving birth overnight at a hospital in the DC area. They were wondering if the baby would be named Sandy. :D In big storms like this, I always think of the families who are due to have a baby and the added stress the weather gives them. :(

Later,
Dan

Wo-hoo! Didn't name her Sandy, but there's a new girl in town as of 8:45 this morning.

Congratulations! Grandkids are the bestestest!:drink:

We didn't even lose a limb! The wind blew out of the northeast for a day on Sunday, then switched to NW Sunday night and were 40-65 all day and 8" of rain! How we didn't lose trees or even the electricity is a miracle.

Congratulations. The two of you have started on the hardest job you will ever do and the most rewarding. Best of luck at every turn.

We lost power around 6 PM, with the basement sump filling up every 4-5 minutes. Fired up the generator. Refilled the tank about 11 and went to bed, hoping the engineers at Honda thought to make their tank big enough to get me a full night's sleep.

Not to worry -- about 2AM the cat woke up my wife, to let her know the electricity was back on. So we plugged everything back into the wall, shut off the generator, and went back to bed. That cat just saved me $55. Never knew he had it in him!

We were fortunate no downed trees or other damage from the howling winds. Traveled to Orville yesterday and saw a lot of overturned wood sheds and destroyed metal sheds. Didn't see any house damage other than a few lost shingles. I'll take all of that as a blessing compared to others not so fortunate.

Hope those of you that saw the worst of Sandy get through this thing unscathed.
