Hunkered down for Sandy?

I was surprised to hear this weekend that the US Navy was not getting all the ships underway in the Hampton Roads/Norfolk area. I wonder if they still think that was a wise decision this morning? Stay safe everyone. Flash floods may be the worst part of this storm for Chesapeake Bay and the Outer Banks.

Good Mornin Jim,
One of my friends from our volunteer FD along with his wife left on a cruise out of NJ, Royal Carribean I believe, on sunday afternoon. Even if they steam away from the storm going east Im sure they are going to run into 30 or 40 ft seas !

Supposedly the cruise lines will do everthing possible to prevent their ships from staying in port to minimize the chance of ship damage and also dock damage...

I wish them God speed !

there's already a couple of YouTube videos on a recent cruise ship that got caught in this. And can you believe that tall ship was actually out in this mess, and has now been abandoned by the crew? What were they thinking?
This storm has the potential to push enormous amounts of water up the Chesapeake and wreck the marinas, again. I use to have a boat there and I know the worry.
Hope you get nothing but lots of rain.

Got my generator running, bought some gas for my cans, hope I don't need it but power is already blipping. Hang on!

Winds have picked up to 50 mph gust, all the leaves are off the trees at least. 4-6 inches of rain predicted here, nothing like the 11" we had last fall! I measured it hear at the house, that was over 3 days and 4 empties, soif wasmore likely more than 11".
Good luck ya'll, hope it doesn't coast ya a fortune, stay safe!

Can you believe it...we have areas here, in No. Georgia losing power from the winds....WE have sustained winds of over 40 MPH at our house right now...we are close to 1,000 miles or more away from the Jersey coast and 1,400 miles from the center of that hurricane,,,,does that give you any idea how big and powerful this storm is...? Yikes...I have to lean into the wind here...so can you imagine what is going to be like there...I just saw a picture on TV of the Jersey shore...it looked like the sea was boiling.....I wish I would have hooked up my PTO generator yesterday but I didn't since we were so far away...hope I don't have to do it with a flashlight....Lesson learned...when in doubt ..hook it up....God bless to all of you in the eye of the storm..

You cannot believe how much gas your generator can go through if you are out of power for 3 days....you need LOTS and LOTS....if you only have 5 gal or so extra....get more...all your emergency preparedness will be tested...hope it goes away, 'fraid it won't.

What I've done is to get two 5 gallon containers full of gas and treated. And also fill up the 24gallon tank in the dodge, the 14gallon tank in the ford and the 18gallon tank in the honda.

good...beware if you should try to siphon from a vehicle that you are likely to mess up the fuel sending unit...

the sirens are wailing, the lights are flickering and the wind is howling like a freight train. Lost power for two hours, then came back on, guess that's how long it took to cut the tree down someplace and fix the lines. I expect it to go out again shortly. Spent ten years in our local volunteer fire company going out in this stuff, warily watching sparking downed wires, waiting forever for PECO the electric co to show up, and getting very little sleep. Now it's nice to stay in, and be very grateful for the volunteers and pros who are already out in this mess. Worst is supposed to be tonight, and I hate night storms, makes everything harder and less safe.

I have family in the DC area. I hope that everyone is well prepared, safe and well behaved in the aftermath. I know it's of little concession, but thank goodness it is only a Cat 1!
