My wife has the 1542xp, it seems to work great.
Deck comes off easy for cleaning.
We also have the mulch kit and 2 tub catch system.
She has about 45 hrs on it without a problem.
This one has a Kawasaki twin cylinder in it.

Cerberus,
Electrolux owns most of the companies that mfg homeowner lawnmowers. they are all mfg at the same location (and all good products) and only painted, labeled, and boxed diferently. Take a look at the electrolux web site to see the list of names they own then take a look at some of the other products. you might be able to find a better price on the same machine with a different label on it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We tried out a 1542XP, real nice machine. Husqvarna offers a trial period, seems like it was 3 days, and I decided to send it back. The only fault with the mower was the hand control for the hydro tranny. I have some pretty steep grades that drop off to a river at the edge. The 1542 tranny would overspeed at about 2x going downhill. When turned uphill, the tranny would slowly disengage itself if you did not hold your hand on the control lever. Seems I was constantly using my beer drinking hand to correct speed issues, plus the overspeed scared my wife, who cuts most of the time. She was used to an old gear drive piece.

I bought the Craftsman DYT 4000 with foot controlled hydro tranny and the problem went away, lift your foot and it stops, period. Very happy with this piece, 70 hrs. so far.

If your yard is relatively level and you do not plan to pull a lot of heavy loads, the Husqvarna will make you a nice unit. Not well suited for grades or heavy pulling.

One additional note. The dealer was a super nice guy, and I would have bought his bigger piece if it would have performed any better, however he told me the tranny was identical in the 2 units, so there was no point in trying.

Diesel Smoke .
That's something to look at before I buy ! But after 4 years of my craftsman ( El cheapo version 20 hp 42" deck ) I need a better mower . I can't count the number of times the drive belt has fallen off . The last time it happened I had to push it up my 800' drive way . I might even look at one of the better Craftsman Mowers
. But ,either way, when I get a new machine , I'm going to dig a hole and bury the old Craftsman .
If I'm not fussing with the belt I'm constantly changing blades . And no , I don't mow rocks ,and stumps /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Thanks, John

You may have purchased a replacement for your Craftsman already. When I looked at the 1848xp it became obvious that it was the equivalent of, I believe, a Craftsman DYT 4000, even made by the same people. There were a few differences, Kawasaki 18 hp on the Husqvarna, vs B & S 21 HP, or Kohler 23 or 25 hp on the Craftsman depending on model. Also besides color, there was a significant price preminum on the Husky, particularly when SEARS has their frequent sales. The Husky can be brought in for service/repairs vs having SEARS come out to the house, so you can get a good deal of help from the dealer. If you didn't like the Craftsman before, you may or may not like the Husky or Craftsman DYT today.

Although the Kawasaki engine is arguably better than the Kohler or Briggs, the engine should be the last item to give up the ghost on your tractor and may be a minor factor. The HP difference between 18 or 21/23/25 may or may not matter. depends whose measuring, but the 25 HP is a 39% jump over the 18 Kawasaki. Maybe the larger Kohler wouldn't work as hard as the smaller Kawasaki to do the same work and could therefore not use much more fuel or be as stressed as hard.

Until 9/19, Sears has the 21 HP Briggs on sale at $2199 with hydro trans and the 25 HP Kohler for $2399.

Just my thoughts, but then what the heck do I know, I don't even own a lawn or garden tractor, and I'm not pushing you in either direction. Good luck on your decision. By the way, what condition is the engine on your old tractor?

I bought the 25 hp Kohler. And Joe1 is right, made by the same folks as the Husqvarna. Lots of similarities. As I stated in previous post, very happy with this piece so far. Plenty of power for any task I've asked.

Joe 1 and Diesel smoke ...... Thanks for the replies.
Got a specific model # for the Craftsman mowers ? (DYT 4000)
Joe 1 ... The engine is actually in great shape . It's never missed a beat . I wish I could say that about the drive system /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
BTW I wasn't knocking Craftsman as a brand . I've got a lot of things from sears over the years . And this mower is the only thing that's given me a headache .
