I have read most of the posts here and you guys seem to have it together, so I have one for you. I have about a 30000# tulsa winch and I want to put on the 3pt on my JD tractor. Powered by Hyd pump hooked to pto The tractor hydraulics wouldn't be enough gpm I don't think ? So what size pump and motor would I need ? or would the tractor remotes work and what size motor? It had chain and sprockets on pto drive shaft on the old truck.

Well, what is your tractor GPM's, and pressure? What is the pumps displacement? That will determine the HP required to drive it . Do you have a pump, or do you want to put a PTO pump on the PTO shaft. They cost around $450

Pulling force by pulling speed = Pulling power (hp)

First I would advice you to go with as high pressure as possible, to keep physical size and prize down on pump and motor. 3000psi (207 bar) is , sort of, a rating limit, so that is a good start.
Then it would depend in your winch's gear ratio, and average drum diameter for the wire. That would determine the input torque and rpm's your motor have to provide. And after that you calculate your pump.
Pump rpm's are set thru the pto, aswell as your pto output power (hp).

Small pump and large motor will give winch a high torque and low rpm, and vice versa.

So start figure out your pto numbers and desired pulling speed and max desired pulling force.

What kind of ratio does it have? That might tell you if it will work on remotes or the external pump option would be better. GPM= speed and pressure=torque. Sounds like an interesting project. Sometimes just to have it work is a success. What are you going to be pulling?

The 2350 has 13 gpm hyd delivery. It takes about 19 tractor HP to supply that flow at 2500psi. You should be able to realize at least 15HP from a hyd motor driven by this flow. Plenty for a winch. You need to know what input torque to the winch will get you the 30k pull. Then find a motor that will deliver a little more torque than that at 2500psi. Choosing a motor wth only a little more torque than you need will give you maximum cable speed when you rev up the JD. You can always idle down or feather the valve to go slow. Hyd motor torque will be constant down to pretty slow speed.

Thanks for all the replies. I am pulling logs up to the road for firewood, my land is very steep, rough and rocky. A lot of down timber from ice last year and I allready have this winch. I would guess this big a winch is somewhat overkill. but maybe with just a hyd motor I will be in business. I am retired and about 75-80 % disabled due to mule riding accident so have to mechanize as much as possible.

How are you goin to mount this winch? If it is the same one I have (going to put on the JD450 crawler loader), it is quite heavy.

And think about how you are going to mount it in order to pull that kind of weight.

I bought this one last year for a potential logging/clearing job and was planning on building a logging arch for it. See the attached pic for a logging arch that was an option on the dozers, to get an idea about them.

30k is a very large winch, be sure to plan carefully so you don't break something expensive.

I went over and removed the winch from dark corner of shed where its been for a few years. I don't think it is any where near 30K. More like 20 its really not that big. I lifted it with fel and don't seem like it is any more than a 4X4 bale of hay. I am going to use a hyd motor and hook to the remotes and see how it works. Thanks again for all comments.

That's better yet. If you get the numbers off the plate, you can call or email them to the company and get specs/manual emailed to you. They were very helpful for me.

Good luck with the project.
