I do that with a long cable and a block or two if it is not direct.

Another thought, if you have a 500rpm PTO would be to use a post hole auger gearbox mounted solid and then put the capstan on that.

That's actually a pretty clever set up. It's got me thinking, and I just happen to have a brand new Predator 6.5 hp motor sitting in the shop. Hmmmmmmmm
What do you suppose that gear box is off of?

The gearbox is just a regular right angle reduction drive. Surplus center has them in multiple different sizes, HP ratings, and ratios.

'Can't be pulling much of a load off PVC pipe and plywood screwed together with dry wall screws.

I'ld be worried about breaking something. My bet is that it's about good for what two men might do hand over hand.

It's a decent proof of concept though. If you were going to spend three days in a machine shop and a couple hundred on materials, it's not a bad way to work out the kinks if there's a big flaw in your design.

Mounting the capstan directly to the motor shaft may be a bad idea. The bearings and the cast iron may not like the force being applied by a 2,000# log. The motor shaft is small. A gear, chain/sprocket/belt driven jack shaft or gear box will put that stress onto larger components made for such. The idea posted that uses a post hole auger gear box sounds pretty good. That gets the hydraulics out of the equation and into a PTO that is made for load stress.

You'd do one of two things with a direct drive capstan: stall the engine, or burn the rope.

Gotta be geared down.

I am wondering just how many rpms a capstan winch needs to turn. Getting the needed power would be the easy part, determining the correct speed is easy enough to do as long as you know what speed to target.
