Am wanting to build a boom pole for the _front_ of my tractor.

This got me looking into hydraulic cylinders which I know very little about.

Take a look at this one.

With a max pressure of 2500psi and a bore diameter of 2.5 inches, I assume that this translates to a max lift of:

A = pi * 1.25^2 = 4.91
A*2500 = 12,275lbs.

And a retracted length of 32 inches and stroke of 24 inches, this translates to a range of motion of 32 - 56 inches.

Do I read this correctly?

TIA,

Mark

Mark:

Push: 12000 lbs
Pull: 8500 lbs

Keep in mind that 2500 is max pressure much less is more realistic.
@ 1500 it gives you 7300 and 5100 respectfully and that is a straight push. You have 24"'s of travel in the cylinder but not understanding your thought of design it is difficult to figure out "range of motion".

Take a look at surplus center and/or prince direct for surplus deals. Just got a 2 spool LVS joystick loader valve with float for $85.00 from Prince for my rear remotes. They have great deals on cylinders if you get to them quick before they sell.

Good luck.

The Prince cylinder you are looking at is a typical one used in several ag applications. It is commonly used for the dump cylinder on several 1 and 2 ton farm wagons (see Country Manufacturing wagons as an example).

As to how much this cylinder will actually lift that will depend on several factors including, but not limited to, how you have it mounted (ie what mechanical advantage is present). I think your simple math regarding lift capacity is a little flawed but my knowledge of such factors is limited.

However, the max psi on your tractor hydraulics may be greater than 2500psi. Since your profile is not filled in it is imposible to determine what you have. If it is then you have got to look at a cylinder with a higher max psi rating. Since you are looking at Prince cylinders why don't you give them a call at 605-235-1220 or download their spec sheets from their web site.

Additionally, since you want to use this on the front of the tractor, is it being used in conjunction with a FEL or in place of a FEL? In either case you lifting capacity will be limited by the FEL and/or the front axle capacity.

One last thing, Grainger is probably the most expensive retailer of parts there is. This same cylinder can be purchased from Surplus Center for $142.

You don't mention the type of tractor you are going to mount this cylinder on. If it is in the CUT size, I would be concerned about putting that large of a load on it. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Below is a thread on a Boom Pole that I mounted on my B2910 Kubota .

Thanks a lot for all of the great info.

I'm just now kicking the tires for this.

My tractor is a CASE/IH 385 (40hp). It does not have a FEL - I wish it did!

I've used a lightweight boom pole on the 3ph to lift rafters into place in the past but a project I'm now noodling will require something with greater capacity than this little boom pole (see attached pix).

I was thinking of moving the boom to the front where it would be easier to see and keep the rear end free. I have been thinking of building a FEL for the tractor and thought that if done right, the mounting brackets and cylinders from a boom pole could be used later for a FEL.

Thanks a lot for the great pointers!

Mark
