Hydraulic Fittings Confusion

   / Hydraulic Fittings Confusion #11
I used to think that jic only came in even numbers. 4-6-8-10-12-etc. Until I got hold of a old McCormick long arm mower. That thing actually had #5 jic ports. Liked to drove me crazy thinking it was some kind of metric oddball fitting. What was really unusual was that the local Carquest autoparts store actually had them in stock.

Yep, all the old Ford/New Holland industrial tractor had -5 JIC fittings for the power steering cylinders.

The dash "-4,-6" is the diameter in 16 ths of an inch. Also next time your in a pinch and all you have Is a jic fitting and an orb/sae port just grab a bonded washer or oring and your back in business, they both have sae threads just the sealing surface is different.

Unixkid:

Think of hydraulic fitting types in the same manner as the numerous flavors of UNIX/LINUX out there...confusing as he!!. My only advice is to avoid NPT fittings if at all possible as NPT is evil in my book. Also, don't make the mistake of using NPT plumbing fittings from Home Despot in your hydraulic system. Plumbing fittings aren't made to the same exacting standards as hydraulic fittings are.
