Thank you soooo much for the suggestions. The oil is draining out right now and I've already bought the correct hydraulic fluid at the local John Deere dealer.

May I suggest you do it twice? Get every bit of "bad oil" out. I assume any residual 80W is a "bad" thing. Run for a bit, get it mixed, get all the hidden 80W out. I assume you cannot drain it all and that there will be some leftover oil. Dilution is the soultion.

I'mm assuming you got a jd303 / hyguard equivalent oil? It will be fine.

The way the hydro sump is shaped.. he could probably pour a quart of 'good' oil in and leat it drain.. or mineral spirits / diesel.. etc.. and it should drain right out. That thinner 303 oil will really thin up any leftover thick oil. In any case.. he's way better off with the UTF oil in it now.

That's just what I got. I let 'er drain for an entire day and then poured a quart or so of the hygard in, let it drain out and then filled it. I plan on using the tractor for some small jobs (a couple of hours work) and then drain/refill with new hygard. Thanks again!

I doubt you will have two. If it gives you piece of mind, go ahead.. but a few oz of the old heavy oil, in those qts of hyguard will be fine. Your hyds would operate on aw46 which is thicker than utf...(which is closer to aw32.. etc.. )
