Hydraulic fluid

I use traveler in my machines hydraulic systems/backhoe/loader which are separate from the trans. For the trans I only use the original manufactures fluid. In my case deere of kubota. My feeling is yes the fluid is expensive but so is a new hydro trans Just my opinion

I use Shell in most things. Even ran Rotella T6 in the motorcycles

Branson took a different approach, so the filters are not painted over.

Here ya go, took me a bit to find it. Post #4 shows the complete video; Yes, they do paint over the Hyd filter (at least with that particular model shown)... Skip to 4:23 and 5:10 of the vid for the primer/painting portions.

Wow.

I assume use of hydraulic fluid any brand you are taking in consideration there are different viscosities and formulations along additives. Meaning not all “hydraulic tractor fluid (HTF) can be used in hydrostatic drive. Rather (HTF) is for gear drive tractors. I believe Kubota coins phrase “UDT” for use in hydrostatic whereas the additive package and viscosity is different. Therefore there is difference between “HTF” and Hydrostatic fluids. There are a Lot of cheap oils out there for use that does not make them worthy of 25k plus compact tractor. Unless technical data sheet is citing test specifications with live data you need to be cautious. Marketing will print anything on side of pail if it will assure sale. Not all oils are equal in performance do your homework or plan to pay for repairs in couple years. From hydraulic and hydrostatic pumps to wet brakes bad oil shortens their life. Pretty bucket of oil doesn’t make it good oil but it can assure sale to unaware user since marketing caught their eye and claims it equal to ever tractor specification in the world. Buyer be aware I am speaking from experience on cheap oil.

I find that most people use a specific fluid not based on scientific data but on rumor, past habits, superstition and the never ending mantra "you get what you pay for". We assume that if it's expensive it's better. I notice that if you look on the bucket of Travelers Premium Hydraulic Fluid it states that it's compatible with Kioti and every other tractor brand. I also remember an O'reilly Auto Parts employee telling me that their Store Brand synthetic motor oil is made in the same plant that Mobile one synthetic is made.

Exactly! Most of the people that bash others because they don't use the brand they use have no clue what it in the brand they use or who actually makes it. They never research for the actual data.

You're right about that. The part about being made in the same plant isn't really relevant though. This is common across the board. Made in the same plant does not mean made with the same base oils and made with the same additives.

Mobil 1 isn't even synthetic but Mobil was able to take advantage of the total lack of any legal description of what synthetic oil was. I have used Rotella for 40 years and have had 0 engine failures. I use 10w30 in my hydraulic systems with 0 failures. Synthetic fluids have a definite advantage under extreme circumstances but I am convinced that if that is what I thought I had to use 0 failures would have been a good amount more costly. The best oil out there is clean oil.

Engine oil is a different beast as full synthetics are common and SAE standards give a lot more assurance of product consistencies brand to brand. The vast majority of THF products (tractor hydraulic fluid) are not full synthetic and there is not a common or a common set of standards that al THFs test to. Mobile 424 is not, Rotella HD is not. AMSOIL is the only one in this category that I know of that's full synthetic. Even UDT2 is only semi-synthetic although many people think it's full synthetic.
